About University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences
Overview
The University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS) was established in Lahore in 1944. The premier institution of Pharmaceutical Education was shifted to the campus of Panjab University, Chandigarh in 1959. UIPS is one of the oldest institutions of PU. The Institute has been imparting knowledge to thousands of students and has risen to become one of the most prestigious pharmaceutical institute of the nation in these 76 years. The elevation of its status from 'The Department' to 'The University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences' in 1994 was a major step in its success journey. In the NIRF rankings released by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), UIPS was ranked second in the year 2016 and third in the years 2017 & 2018 among the top-ranking pharmacy institutes on our country.
The Campus
The University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences is spread over a vast area in the North Campus of Panjab University, Chandigarh. The two-storeyed buildings painted in red have some of the most advanced facilities available for students, researchers and faculty. UIPS has various labs having modern types of equipment, library, computer labs, a large number of lecture halls, auditorium and a number of grounds. Moreover, since the lush green campus is present in Panjab University, so students get the access to all kinds of sports facilities such as swimming pool, hockey ground, football ground, gymnasium hall, shooting range, cricket ground, etc. A.C Joshi Library of the University which is the largest library of Punjab offers additional education support to students. PU has 8 hostels for boys, 10 for girls and 1 working women hostel. The whole campus is wi-fi enabled offering all sorts of educational help to students.
Achievements
The University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences hosted the Indian Pharmaceutical Congress in 1994. Three of its alumni received presidential honors of the Indian Pharmaceutical Congresses. The Institute received special recognition by the UGC as it was granted SAP in 1993 and COSIST in 1981. ICMR Advanced Centre for standardization of Drugs of Indian System of Medicine was established in this Institute which made it the most prestigious pharmaceutical institute of India. UIPS is the first University Institution of India to be granted with this status. Since 2009, the UIPS is the only institute of India to serve as UGC Networking Resource Centre (NRC) to impart training to pharmacy professionals in various leading domains of pharmaceutical sciences.

- Search for new chemical entities (synthetic/semi-synthetic/natural).
- QbD-based development of novel and nanostructured drug delivery systems.
- Advanced pharmacokinetic modeling.
- Crystal engineering of active biomolecules.
- Advanced pharmacological studies related to drug discovery and development.
- Herbal drug standardization and development of novel herbal formulations.
Placements
UIPS has its own special placement cell named as Panjab University Pharmaceutical Society (PUPS) to help and train students to get the best of the job opportunities in various companies around the globe. An on-campus placement drive is conducted every year and students are inducted through campus interviews in major pharmacy companies like e Ranbaxy, Procter & Gamble, Dr. Reddy's, IPCA, Novartis, Mylan, Abbott, Zydus Cadila, Sun Pharma, Panacea Biotec, Dabur, Nicholas-Piramal, Ind-Swift, Heron, Quantum Solutions, Jubilant Pharma, E-valueserve, and the likes. The . UIPS has a record 100% placement record in recent years.
Alumni Relations
More than 1375 graduates, over 1068 postgraduates and 230 Ph.Ds are the proud alumni of this premier Institute. Several of these alumni hold prestigious positions in industry, research and academic institutes in India as we across the globe including US, Canada, etc. Some of the notable alumni include Professor Harkrishan Singh who is a Padma Shri winner and doyen of Indian pharmaceutical sciences; emeritus Professor P C Dandiya of SMS Medical College, Jaipur who is a former rector of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. The Institute has a working alumni relations committee which maintains the contact with various alumni and an alumni meet is conducted every year.
