About Centre For Nuclear Medicine
Overview The Centre For Nuclear Medicine was established in the year 2007 to train human resource as medical physicists and radiation safety officers for running nuclear medicine industries and departments that use radioisotopes. Since nuclear medicine courses are available in a few institutions only, the Centre has been able to get its name in the top institutions of India within a few years. Nuclear medicine is a diverse emerging field where we use small amounts of radioactive materials, usually isotopes for human body diagnosis, research and curing various diseases. Nuclear medicine imaging technology is advancing day by day to help humans explore the wonders of the human body. The students are trained in all areas on nuclear medicine to help advance the research and explore this field.
Unique Features Centre For Nuclear Medicine, Panjab University is the second institution after AIIMS to start M.Sc. Course in Nuclear Medicine. The course is fully approved by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board of India. The Centre has signed MoU with the Department of Nuclear Medicine, PGIMER, Chandigarh and the students get ample opportunity for practical clinical training. The course is unique in itself. The first-year classes are conducted on the PU campus while in the second year, students are imparted practical hands-on training at The Department of Nuclear Medicine, PGIMER, Chandigarh. Students have to clear a radiation safety officer exam conducted by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board and get easily placed as this is an emerging field with ample scope.
The Campus The Centre For Nuclear Medicine is established in a vast area near 'The University Institute of Engineering and Technology' in the South Campus of Panjab University, Chandigarh. The lush green campus has presently only ground floor and one block while the other blocks and floors are being constructed. The block has sufficient classrooms and facilities for the students. PU has 8 hostels for boys and 10 hostels for girls. The whole campus is wi-fi enabled with some of the best facilities available for students such as shooting range, cricket ground, football ground, swimming pool, canteens, A.C Joshi Library, student centre, etc. The Centre has well-equipped research and practical labs, a radiation lab duly approved by BARC, Mumbai, India.
Courses Currently, U.I.E.A.S.T. offers only M.Sc. in Nuclear Medicine. The course has 12 seats with an annual fee of Rs 50,000/- approx. Eligibility: Minimum qualifications for admission to M.Sc. in Nuclear Medicine will be B.Sc. from a recognized institution/university with Physics and Chemistry (non-medical stream) or Chemistry & Zoology/Biotechnology (medical stream) as core subjects or B.Sc. in Nuclear Medicine/Biophysics. Admission to M.Sc. course in Nuclear Medicine will be through PUCET (PG) entrance test conducted by PU. The interested candidates should have passed the graduation (B.Sc.) from a recognized University/Institute with at least 50% marks. While deciding the final merit of the entrance test, a weightage is also given to the marks obtained by the candidate in B.Sc. to be decided by University every year. A PhD course of 3-6 years is also available. In the coming years, more courses are likely to be introduced.
Placements Although the Centre is only a decade old, it has a record 100% placement record. Though the nuclear study is an emerging area, the students easily get a starting package of Rs 5-7 lakhs approx. The students have been successfully placed in renowned institutes/hospital such as AIIMS, New Delhi; CMC, Ludhiana; Oswal, Ludhiana; Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai; Baba Farid University, Faridkot; Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi; Max Hospital, Chandigarh, PGIMER, Chandigarh; Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Speciality Hospital, Delhi.
Alumni The first batch of the Centre passed in the year 2009 and was successfully placed. The Centre is in touch with alumni so that they can guide the present and upcoming students. Most of the students are working as radiation safety officers in various institutions.
