About Centre For Nanoscience & Nanotechnology
Overview Centre for Nanoscience & Nanotechnology (CNSNT), Panjab University, Chandigarh was established in the year in the year 2005 to promote and develop research in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. The Centre offers extensive advanced facilities for research in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology for both the students and faculty of PU. Many of the PU professors are known nationwide for their research in physics and this Centre helps them to advance their research. The Centre has grown into an independent centre under the initiative of University Institute for Emerging Areas in Science and Technology (UIEAST) by Panjab University. Panjab University is the largest and the best-ranked government university of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh region.
CNSNT has close collaborative research program initiatives and arrangements to share infrastructure with the top national scientific research institutions of the country such as IISER(Mohali), IIT (Delhi), IITs (Ropar and Mumbai), CSIR Laboratories (CSIO, IMTECH-Chandigarh), IHBT (Palampur), INST (Mohali), NPL (Delhi), IISc (Bengaluru), and NIPER (Mohali). The Centre has signed MOUs with INST, Mohali and Saitama University, Japan for research collaboration and sharing infrastructure facilities to promote the research and developmental activities and students participation.
Unique Features Centre for Nanoscience & Nanotechnology (CNSNT), Panjab University is one of the participant departments of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) network universities. Only a few universities have been able to be a part of BRICS network universities and PU is honoured to be one of them.
The Campus CNSNT is present over a vast area adjoining the Centre for Nuclear Medicine in the South Campus of Panjab University. The buildings are painted in white and red colour with lush green grounds around it. The Centre is very close to the sector-15 and sector-24 markets. The whole campus is wi-fi enabled and PU has 8 hostels for boys, 10 hostels for girls in addition to a working women hostel. Some of the major instruments available with CNSNT are UV-Vis spectrophotometer and Spin Coating Unit. The Centre has practical and research laboratories equipped with advanced technologies in the Physics, Chemistry departments and Centre for System Biology & Bioinformatics of Panjab University. It shares its library with the Department of Physics. In addition to the shared library, PU has A.C Joshi Library which is the largest library of Punjab region. Panjab University has some of the best facilities available for students and faculty such as the student centre, swimming pool, cricket ground, football ground, hockey ground, gymnasium hall, etc. PU ranks among the top 10 universities of the country.
Courses The Centre for Nanoscience & Nanotechnology currently offers the course of M.Tech in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. The course details can be found in the page below. Besides, it also offers a PhD course of 3-5 years and candidates can get admission in it depending on the seat availability.
Thrust Areas Following are some of the areas in which the Centre focuses:
- 2D-layered materials, graphene-based devices, transition metal dichalcogenides for photovoltaic, optoelectronics, and biosensing applications.
- Development of third generation solar cells and electrodes using interconnect material.
- Plasmonic properties of anisotropic metal manostructures.
- Use of nanomaterial in chemosensors and biosensors, nanoparticles in immunodiagnostics, carbon nanotubes and their healthcare applications, metallic nanoparticles for pesticide and contaminants detection, design of polymer nanocomposites.
