About Centre For Public Health
Overview Centre of Public Health was established in the year 2007 under the initiative of University Institute for Emerging Areas in Science and Technology (U.I.E.A.S.T) Panjab University to cater to the emerging needs of India to produce trained professional manpower for handling public healthcare. Public health is emerging as one of the most significant areas as the health of the citizen is an important resource and asset of a nation. Major advances in the improvement of health over the next decade will be through the development and application of preventive programmes. Health service delivery systems are undergoing rapid changes. It is important to prepare a task force of experts in the domain of public health. This course is being offered to prepare public health professional and to strengthen the capacity of various health organizations in and around India.
Unique features There are very few government universities which offer a course of Master in Public Health and Panjab University, Chandigarh is one of them.
The Campus Centre For Public Health is spread over a vast area near the Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in the South Campus of Panjab University. The buildings are painted in red and white colour and surrounded by lush green gardens and playgrounds. The university campus is wi-fi enabled having a variety of facilities such as A.C Joshi Library, swimming pool, student centre, cricket ground, football ground, hockey ground, gymnasium hall and much more. PU has 10 hostels for girls, 8 for boys, several sports hostels and one working women hostel. The Centre is very close to sector-15 and sector-24 markets. The Centre is developing and renovating its infrastructure every year.
Courses The Centre for Public Health currently offers a Masters course in Public Health. It is a two years course having 24 seats (17+5 in-service+2 NRI+1 foreign national seat). Eligibility: Bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 50% marks from recognized University/Institute. Admission Criteria: Admission will be made based on merit drawn in PU-CET (PG) entrance test (50%) + Total aggregate of marks obtained at graduation level (50%). The duration of the entrance test is 1 hour 30 minutes and it consists of 75 multiple-choice questions of one mark each, having 25 from Biological Sciences, 10 from Social Sciences, 25 from Health Sciences & Medical Vocabulary and15 on Environmental Sciences.
There is also a PhD course of 3-6 years. The seats are subject to availability and the eligibility and admission criteria to this course can be found on the official website of Panjab University.

Job Opportunities & Placements Since public health is an emerging area, the placements are usually off-campus. But since there are fewer graduates in public health and with increasing demand, students having masters in public health have a lot of job opportunities and they can be placed as specialists in health service administration, epidemiology, environmental health, biostatistics, nutrition, biomedicine, health education, health educators, policy analysts, epidemiologists, researchers, food safety inspectors, health inspectors, in pharmaceutical companies, in health service companies, in health insurance companies, in local/state/central government health departments, in government and private hospitals.
Alumni Relations The Centre focuses on maintaining good relations with the alumni. The alumni share their valuable experiences and help the upcoming batches of students to get better placements. Centre for Public Health conducted the first alumni meet on 07th May 2016 and since then regular alumni meets are conducted every year.
