About St. Francis College for Women
St Francis College for Women (SFC) was established in 1959 by the Sisters of Charity, a Catholic missionary group. It had only 15 students when it was started. Affiliated to the Osmania University, the college offers courses on science, humanities and the commerce streams. There are both undergraduates as well as postgraduate courses along with some diploma and certificate courses. The institute has been enjoying autonomous status ever since 1988 and has the freedom to devise its own courses. Students have the freedom to choose courses from other streams and get extra credits if they take up some skill-based certificate or diploma programs and even study abroad summer programs.
Infrastructure facilities The campus of St Francis College is a sprawling one, covering an area of around 8 acres. It has two buildings that have state of the art facilities in its classrooms, laboratories and a library. There are separate reading rooms and conference halls. The classrooms or lecture halls, as they say, are 75 in number and have facilities like public address system, audio-visual facilities, screens and projectors. The conference halls are used for seminars, workshops and interactive sessions which are often attended by industry experts and noted academicians.
Other than the usual science labs, the college has a commerce lab as well as an English language lab. The commerce lab builds on the conceptual skills in commerce and the English lab hones the communication skills of the students by working on aspects such as phonetics, grammar, accent, etc. The library which is fully computerized has more than 83,000 books and numerous journals & magazines. Students have access to e-journals and make use of the online catalogue service for accessing the vast resources of the library.
Among other things, the college has a state of the art mass communication studio that is used for purposes like shooting ad films, news bulletins, etc. The studio has all the necessary equipment like DSLR cameras, lapel mikes, video cameras, video editing equipment, colour printers, teleprompter and even a green room. 'Francis Bol' is the online campus radio of the college with all necessary facilities to run a mini radio station.
The college has 30 departments with 178 well-accomplished teachers. They are kind of role models for the students. There are staff rooms that have the internet as well as Wi-Fi facilities. There is a canteen called 'aharam' that provides healthy and good to eat snacks and beverages. Aaram Viram and the Nightingale's Nest are park kind of things for the students to revise, relax, rest or do rehearsals for cultural activities. There is no end to facilities at St. Francis College as there is something like a students' corner for stationeries, an American corner with a digital collection of more than 25 lakh books and volumes on American culture and life, a health centre and two prayer rooms. The health centre is manned b a nurse and a visiting doctor attends to the medical needs of the students as per the need. There are regular health camps too.
The college has a placement cell that facilitates the students in seeking employment. It trains the students in various skills like resume preparation, group discussion, corporate etiquettes, confidence-building measures, leadership skills, interview skills and so on. Students are also provided career guidance. Among the companies that visit the campus for placements are Google, Dell, Cognizant, Deloitte, Amazon, Wipro BPO, Franklin Templeton, Facebook, and many more.
Admissions at SFC For admissions at St Francis College for its UG and PG programs, candidates to check for admission notifications at its website. For the session 2020-21, the college is accepting applications through online mode. Selections are purely on merit. For UG courses the selection criterion is marks or grades obtained in class 10 and class 12 exams. For PG programs, the marks obtained in the degree program are considered. Those having cleared the PG entrance exam of the Osmania University are also considered.
