About Dr. M.G.R. Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri
Dr. M.G.R. Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri was established in the year 2013. It is under the jurisdiction of the Tamilnadu Dr.J.Jayalalithaa Fisheries University. The college offers courses at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. levels. The college has seven departments, namely, Aquaculture, Fish Processing Technology, Fisheries Extension, Economics & Statistics, Fisheries Technology & Fisheries Engineering, Fisheries Biology & Resource Management, Aquatic Environment Management, and Aquatic Animal Health Management.
Campus infrastructure and facilities The college campus is a spacious one dotted with modern buildings. There are hostels as well quarters for staff. It has an open-air auditorium and a large playground. The library is also a spacious one with more than 3000 sq. ft. of space. stocked with the usual resources like books, periodicals, newspapers, etc. A scanning and photocopying facility at a nominal charge is also available at the library.
The college has a placement cell that trains and helps the students in getting placed in the fisheries industry. It also guides the students towards postgraduate and Ph.D. studies in India and abroad. Among the services undertaken by the cell are conducting group discussions, mock interviews, seminars, guest lectures, and maintaining a database of students who have graduated, corporate entities, and research institutions.
Activities The college conducts various events like College Day, Hostel Day, and Sports Day. The students also engage in activities like creating awareness about the environment, taking part in campaigns related to cleaning the coastal areas, NSS camps, and so on.
