About Centre for Geo-Information Science and Technology
Geospatial information has become an essential tool, in sustainable developmental planning, all over the world and thus Geo-Information Science and Technology has emerged as a most sought after thrust area of research. So far only a few countries could switch over to Geomatics based planning and administration. Our country has started initiatives in this line and the Natural Resources Data Management System (NRDMS), a wing of DST, Govt. of India, is in the process of evolving strategies to meet the requirements. This will become essential as the country is planning to switch over to GIS-based administration in service sectors such as telecom, water supply and electricity, to begin with. The sectors such as revenue, taxation, banking and insurance are also planning to follow the path soon. Such a development calls for the capacity building in Geospatial information science. In this context a proposal submitted by the University of Kerala to establish a centre of excellence was approved by the NRDMS and the DST has sanctioned a financial assistance of Rs.1.45 crores. The centre, named as "Centre of Geo-Information Science and Technology" is visualised as a joint venture of DST, KSCSTE and the University. The mission is to develop advanced capability (including infrastructure and trained man power) in spatial information science to meet the technical, socio-economic and administrative requirements of the state.
