About Department of Bio-Technology
An Overview The Department of Biotechnology was set up in 1989 and it was developed into a full-fledged Department in the year 1994 with the help of funds from the government of India. The Institute was the first in North India to start B.Sc. (Hons. School) course in Biotechnology. The Institute has now been ranked among the top Bio-technology institutes of the country and offers some of the best salary packages to students. Most of the students further go in research field in India while some of the students go for higher studies in foreign universities.
The Campus The lush green campus is currently present near the UIET campus in the South Campus of Panjab University. The wifi-enabled campus has two blocks with three floors each and has currently the best infrastructure among the institutes of South Campus. The Biotechnology Department uses solar panels to produce electricity to save the natural resources. The Department has a number of modern laboratories with all the best facilities available for both the students and research scholars. Animal cell culture laboratory, plant tissue culture laboratory and bioinformatics laboratory are some of the oldest and well-established laboratories of the Institute. The Department also has two central instrumentation rooms which are common for undergraduate & postgraduate and for Ph.D. students, cold room facility, 50 KVA gen set, library with the most advanced collection of books and a number of instruments such as laminar flow chamber, millipore water purification system, CO2 incubator, ELISA reader, etc.
The Courses The Department currently offers a B.Sc. (Hons.) course and M.Sc (Biotechnology) course under the framework of Honours School System. The B.Sc. (Hons.) course is of 3 years with 15 general+12 (NRI) seats and an annual fee of Rs 17,512/-. Admission to this course is conducted on the basis of PU-CET(UG) entrance exam where 75% weightage is given to the entrance exam and 25% to class 12th examination marks. A candidate aiming to take admission in this course must have secured a minimum aggregate of 50% marks in class 12th or equivalent examination with the subjects English, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology.
The students who have passed the B.Sc. (Hons.) Biotechnology course from Panjab University are eligible to take admission in the 2 year M.Sc. (Biotechnology) course without giving any addition entrance exam. In addition to the ongoing classes, there are 5 general+2 SC+ 2 NRI seats for students who have done the graduate degree from any other institute and admissions to this course are conducted on the basis of PU-CET(PG) entrance exam conducted by PU every year in which 60% weightage is given to the entrance exam and 40% to academic marks.
There is also a Ph.D. course of 3-6 years duration and depend on the availability of seats.

Placements The Department provides counselling to the students to help them choose the career of their choice. More than 50% PG students join Ph.D and many of them do Ph.D in foreign universities in Canada, US, EU, etc. Most of the students go in the research or teaching field. A large number of students also join private companies offering good packages but most of the scope in Bio-technology is in the research field.
Alumni Relations Since the Department of Biotechnology is more than 30 years old, it has a strong alumni base which remains in contact with the college authorities and guides the future generation of students.
