M.V Muthiah (MVM) Government Arts college for Women was started in the year 1966 by the State Government of Tamil Nadu. The college caters to the educational needs of the rural women students residing in and around Dindigul. MVM College is affiliated to Mother Teresa women's university, Kodaikanal and is re-accredited with an ‘A' grade by NAAC. The college got its name after the philanthropist Anguvilas M.V.Muthiah Pillai, who donated his 40 acres of land on Dindigul-Salem Main road to build the college. MVM College provides holistic education to the students in a good learning atmosphere. The main aim of the college is to raise the standards of the rural and economically backward class women by providing quality education in the subjects of Arts and Science.
AcademicsMVM College offers 12 UG and 8 PG courses in arts and science. In addition, the college also offers 4 M.Phil programmes and PG diploma courses in Computer Application. There are nearly 13 departments in the college. The departments that are actively operating in the college are Department of Chemistry, Commerce, Computer Science, Economics, English, History, Geography, Mathematics, Tamil, Physics, Statistics, Zoology and Plant Bio-Technology.
The college provides both theoretical and practical knowledge to the students. The college also offers Remedial Coaching classes for SC/ST/OBC students to boost up their confidence level and to enhance the pass percentage of the students in their subjects. To enhance the academic performance of the students, the department of English and Mathematics conducts special training classes to the socially and economically disadvantaged MBC/SC/ST students every year with the funds provided by the Tamil Nadu Government.
For all the first year non-computer science students, MVM College offers Computer Literacy programme (CLP). The college offers CLP programme with a moderate fee and provides training on computer fundamentals including theory, design and practical. At the end of the year, exams are conducted on CLP and certificates are issued by the Government of Tamil Nadu, indicating the successful completion of CLP.
InfrastructureMVM College is located in a beautiful place with a view of Malaikottai and Sirumalai. The college has spacious classrooms and well equipped laboratories with latest equipment and instruments. The computer lab of the college has many computers with internet facilities. The college library is stocked with nearly 50,000 books, newspapers, magazines and journals. The students are allowed to access the library, to update and enrich their knowledge. The college has playground, canteen, co-operative stores, intercom facilities, public addressing system and drinking water facilities. Separate play courts are available for basketball, tennis, football, kho-kho and badminton. The college offers hostel to the students with accommodation and food facilities. In addition, the college hostel has recreation facilities, reading rooms, dispensary and medical facilities for all the students. For the safety of the students and the staff, the entire campus is covered with CCTV cameras.
ActivitiesThe college motivates the students to participate in the inter-college and inter- university sports tournament. The students from the college have brought laurels to the college in different games and sports. The college encourages the students to involve in social and community services conducted by NSS and RRC. The units of NSS and RRC regularly conduct awareness programmes, blood donation camps, rallies, etc. The youth welfare club and fine arts association of the college conducts cultural activities and competitions regularly to bring out the hidden talent of the students. Every year the college celebrates Independence day, Gandhi Jayanthi, Republic day, Martyr's day, College day and Fine Arts day with multiple events and special programmes.
