About Madurai Diraviyam Thayumanavar Hindu College
The M.D.T. Hindu College was started in the year 1878 in Tirunelveli and is occupying more than 80 acres of land at a distance of 8 kilometers from the Tirunelveli railway station. It offers higher education to both male and female students and is affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli. It has also acquired the "2(f) and 12(B)" as per the UGC regulation Act. At present, the college is offering 15 undergraduate courses, 6 postgraduate courses, and 5 research programs, among which some are self-financed.
FacilitiesThe College has a long history and has improved a lot over the years. It has a language lab aimed to help students in improving their communication skills. It is computerized with more than 40 headphones and microphones attached to them. The computers in the lab have pronunciation software along with many other language software required for language improvement.
About the Science labs, the college has separate Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology labs. The physics lab is divided into UG and PG sections. The PG section is more advanced with a functional solar energy system and advanced instruments to support research programs. The chemistry lab and zoology lab are well equipped and can accommodate 36 students at a time. The zoology lab has a museum attached to it having specimens related to the syllabus.
The computer department was started in 1988. There are 2 separate computer labs with sufficient sitting capacity and computers. The computers are the latest in terms of configuration and software.
There is a big auditorium on the campus with a capacity to accommodate around 1000 people at a time. It is used for celebrations, meetings, seminars, and presentations. It is also used for conducting exams.
There is a beautiful and well equipped indoor stadium constructed with the financial help offered by the UGC and management team.
The library is very spacious with a good collection of books including, e-books, magazines, journals, thesis, e-Journals, and many more. Apart from this main library, there are small libraries in every department.
The classrooms are advanced and are more like ICT halls equipped with Interactive boards, LCDs, OHPs, and all other audiovisual aids. These halls are also suitable for presentations and video conferencing.
To support the proper physical growth, a separate physical education department is there in the college. Along with the theory, the students get all the facilities to learn and play various outdoor and indoor games. It also has a well-equipped gymnasium, a fitness lab, and a stadium.
Apart from all the important facilities, the college also has generators to offer uninterrupted power supply, a drinking water facility with a purifier, and a canteen offering hygienic food at a reasonable cost.
ActivitiesThe College is also actively participating in various extracurricular activities. NSS (National Service Scheme) was started in the year 1969 with an aim of teaching about social service to their students. The Red Ribbon Club (RRC) is also functional as a part of NSS and the participants learn about HIV awareness and conduct various training and camps to create awareness about the same.
The NCC of the college is now more than 50 years old. The students learn many activities like weapon training, firing, trekking, map reading, etc. The selected cadets get the opportunity to participate in the New Delhi parade and National Integration Camp every year.
The interested students are also participating in the Youth Welfare Section and YRC (Youth Red Cross) clubs every year. - Padmini
