About Central Institute of Tool Design (CITD)
Central Institute of Tool Design (CITD) was set up in 1968 by the Government of India to provide courses in tool designing and engineering. The institute was set up with the assistance of the United Nation's Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Labour Organization (ILO). The institute has its main campus in Hyderabad and a branch campus at Vijayawada. Apart from the two campuses, there is an extension centre in Chennai. Over the years, ever since it was set up, CITD has trained a large number of technical personnel in designing and manufacturing tools, dies and moulds. A number of Industries have thus been immensely benefitted by the availability of trained manpower direct from the institute. Consultancy and advisory services are also being rendered by the institute to many industries.
Programs and courses A number of short term and long term programmes are offered at CITD. These programmes are mainly in the field of tool designing &manufacturing, tool engineering, computer-aided designing, computer-aided manufacturing, low-cost automation, and mechatronics. The programmes help the trainees in gaining skills in one or the other cutting-edge technologies. The programmes are from the diploma level to postgraduation. There are even two M.E. and one M.Tech programme being offered here in collaboration with Osmania University and JNTU Hyderabad. Some of the programmes are also attended by foreign students.
The training methodology at CITD includes an equal share of both theory and practicals for the postgraduate level courses. Among the theory subjects, some of the subjects like mathematics, material science, computer graphics, fuzzy logic, etc are taught by faculty from the College of Engineering, Osmania University. The subjects related to tool engineering are taught by subject experts from CITD itself. Diploma level courses have 25% theory and 75% practicals. All trainees get trained in manufacturing the tools and handling the precision machines.
Apart from the training programmes, the institute has been proactive in designing and developing tools for the industries. The institute has been providing consultancy services as well as servicing facilities to many of the small scale industries in developing tools, dies and moulds. It has also been recommending measures for standardization of tools, jigs and fixtures, dies and moulds and various other tools.
Infrastructure and facilities CITD has the latest in equipment and precision machinery, some of which have been donated by the UNDP. The staff and the faculty have even been trained by UNDP experts who have stayed in the institute for five years. The institute has thus expert trainers, numbering around 25, with vast industry experience.
The tool room at CITD has sophisticated machines such as the CNC turning and milling machines with closed-loop systems that help getting trained on CNC programming. There are also 4 and 5-axis high-speed machining centres, 3D Coordinate measuring machine, CNC Cylindrical Grinding Machine and many more.
Amongst the other infrastructural facilities available at CITD is the calibration laboratory, which too has the latest equipment like the Universal Horizontal Metroscope, Slip Gauge Measuring Unit and devices to calibrate limit gauges, micrometers, dial indicators, etc.
The CAD/CAM centre used to train the personnel on computer-aided designing and manufacturing haS computer hardware like Dell, IBM, Compaq and Pentium IV systems. The software includes AutoCAD, Ansys, Catia V5, Hypermesh, MasterCam, and so on.
The library at CITD has the latest collection of technical books and journals related to tool engineering. The institute has subscriptions to international journals like American Machinist, Journal of Engineering Materials & Technology, Precision Tool Maker, Precision Engineering, etc.
The institute has hostel facilities within the campus itself for local as well as foreign students.
Admissions at CITD Central Institute of Tool Design offers a number of short term and long term courses. All these courses along with their duration, course fees, course content and eligibility are listed on the courses page on the institute's website. - Dhruv
