About B.P. Poddar Institute of Management and Technology
B.P. Poddar Institute of Management and Technology, abbreviated as BPPIMT, was founded in 1999 in Kolkata. Set up by the ‘B.P. Poddar Foundation for Education, a trust named after the philanthropist, educationist and former Chairman of IIT Kharagpur, Late Shri Badri Prasad Podder. The institute was established with the aim of providing quality education in the field of engineering and management. The courses offered by the institute are approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), whereas, the institute is affiliated with the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT), formerly the West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT).
The main campus of the college is located at a prime location near the famous Haldiram store at VIP Road, Kolkata. A second campus was later established in 2005 at Sector V in Saltlake, Kolkata. As per NIRF Ranking 2020 for institutes, the college ranks within 201-250.
Academics BPPIMT specializes in offering undergraduate programmes in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics & Communication and Information Technology. Besides the above four disciplines, it offers undergraduate programmes on Computer Application and Business Administration. It also offers a 3-year postgraduate course in Computer Application.
Infrastructure As for infrastructure facilities is concerned, the college is well endowed with infrastructures like classrooms, laboratories, library, college canteen, hostels and a lot more.
It has a number of well-equipped laboratories relevant to the courses being offered. There are three state-of-the-art computer labs or centres as they are called, two for the undergraduate students and one for postgraduate students. All the computer centres are enabled with LAN and internet connectivity. In fact, the entire campus has a high-speed fibre optic network for internet connectivity.
An innovation lab with the latest hardware and programming facilities helps the students to come up with a number of innovative projects. To improve upon the communication skills of the students in the English language, there is a language lab that makes use of the latest learning aids like headsets, PA systems, recording facilities, etc. To enhance the student's public speaking skills and personality, they are given the opportunity to participate in group discussions, mock interviews, reading sessions and so on.
The library is an extensive one with a large number of books, periodicals and other study materials. The library is spacious and has a digital library facility as well, which allows the students to access various e-books and other e-resources. To enhance the learning experience for the students, the library makes use of the National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), an online learning portal, from where a number of important lecture videos can be accessed.
For extracurricular activities like sports, the college conducts them off-campus. The college does not have a playground of its own. As such, annual sports, inter-college football events, throw ball and cricket tournaments are organized at a nearby rented stadium. Indoor games such as chess, carom and table tennis are available at the campus premises itself. As for other activities, students from the college have been regularly participating in various hackathons and other contests both at the state and national level. The participating students have won awards on several occasions.
The college provides well-furnished hostel accommodation for both male and female students. Depending upon one's budget, a student can avail AC or non-AC accommodation. The boy's hostel has accommodation for 125 students and the girl's hostel for 110 students. The hostels are located off-campus, but quite close to the college. Being located on the main road, transport facilities like buses, taxis, cabs and share autos are easily available.
Apart from the above infrastructure facilities, the college has a canteen, first aid facilities, on-call ambulance services and regular health checkup of the students. Health camps are conducted at least twice a year. Students who may need critical medical services are transferred to nearby hospitals.
Admissions For admissions to undergraduate courses in engineering, the candidate will have to qualify for either the West Bengal Joint Entrance Exam (WBJEE) or the national level JEE Main exam. Apart from qualifying any of the above two exams, the candidate should have passed 10+2 or equivalent from a recognized board with physics and maths as the compulsory subjects and any one from chemistry, computer science, biology, computer application, biotechnology or a technical vocational subject. The candidate should have scored at least 45% marks on average in the above three subjects and 30% in English.
For engineering diploma and B.Sc degree holders, there is a provision for lateral entry to the second year of the relevant undergraduate programme. Such admissions are capped to 10% of the total intake.
Admission to BCA and BBA programmes is through the Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by MAKAUT, West Bengal.
For the postgraduation course in computer application, eligible candidates will have to qualify for the Joint Entrance Exam for MCA courses conducted by West Bengal Joint Entrance Exam Board. The candidates should have a minimum of 50% marks in graduation and should have taken mathematics as one of the subjects at least till 10+2. - Dhruv
