About Acharya Prafulla Chandra College
Acharya Prafulla Chandra College was founded in the year 1960 in New Barrackpore in the state of West Bengal. It offers UG courses in Science, Arts, and Commerce streams and PG courses in Science stream, and also PG courses in Bengali and History.
FacilitiesTo provide reference material and textbooks to the students, there is a central library in the college. There is a large collection of textbooks, reference books, journals, magazines, CDs, newspapers, etc. In addition to the central library, there are individual departmental libraries also in various departments for the benefit of the students. The library has a facility of internet room where the teachers and staff can access the web for various educational information.
The college is having a wing of NSS (National Service Scheme) where the volunteers learn various facades of NSS and develop community serving and other social campaigns from time to time. Presently there are units of NSS comprising 100 students each. Some of the activities where these students are engaged are - College Beautification, Anti-communal week observation, Anti-smoking campaign in a nearby railway station, Social integration schemes, Health awareness camps in a nearby village, Visiting nearby Anganwari Centres, Adoption of nearby villages for social work, etc.
Remedial Coaching is provided to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layers) and minority candidates. This program aims to improve the skills and knowledge of these backward class students. These classes are taken by the normal staff as well as the by the available retired teachers and research scholars in the institution.
There are two hostels available in the college - one for the girls having the capacity for 80 students and the other for the boys belonging to only SC/ST/OBC categories having a capacity of 80. The boy's hostel is set up by the Backward Class Welfare Department of the Govt. of West Bengal.
All the departments like Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Statistics, Mathematics, Electronics, Anthropology, Botany, Food & Nutrition, Zoology, etc are having well-equipped laboratories for the students for carrying out the practical work. There is one language lab under the department of English where students are taught the language pronunciation and usage using audiovisual methods.
There is a counseling and placement facility in the college and a cell monitors this where the dedicated staff helps the students for pursuing their career goals. The college has active contact with many organizations and industrial units where there is the scope of absorbing the fresh graduates or postgraduates passing out from the college.
College is having good sports facilities and it has a policy of promoting sports proficient students to participate in tournaments and other such sports events. There are outdoor and indoor types of games available for the use of students. Multigym equipment is also provided for the exercise needs of the students. College also provides financial assistance to the outstanding players for going out to participate in state or national level events.
There is one seminar room and one auditorium for holding various lecture sessions or cultural programs from time to time where students are encouraged to participate and perform in these extracurricular activities.
The college has taken initiative in arranging an in-house medical facility and self contributory medical insurance scheme for the students. Each student has to pay the annual insurance premium amounting to Rs 128 for this. The college has arranged it in association with United India Insurance Company Limited.
AdmissionsThe candidates who have passed in their Higher Secondary (10+2) or its equivalent examination and also passed in English subject there (English question paper maximum marks not less than 100) are eligible to apply for admission to the B.A./B.Sc./B.Com. (Honours and General) courses. The minimum marks eligibility (obtained in Higher Secondary (10+2) exam) is at least 50% in aggregate and 45% in the related subject or a minimum of 55% in the related subject or 50% in aggregate even though the candidate did not study the subject in Higher Secondary but otherwise satisfies all other conditions of the admission eligibility. For the Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe candidates, the minimum marks eligibility is only having 40% marks in the aggregate and 40% marks in the related subject. If a sufficient number of candidates are not available for a particular UG course then the above eligibility conditions can be relaxed by the principal of the college after taking permission from the university. The candidates have to apply for admission online on the college website and furnish all the information and also upload the documents mentioned therein. The admissions will be strictly on a merit basis and students will be informed about it as well a list will be displayed on the college website. The selected candidates will have to bring all the original documents like High School and Higher Secondary mark sheets, Aadhar card, Proof of date of birth, caste certificate (if applicable), TC and character certificate from the earlier institute, Passport photographs, etc and produce it at the time of admission. The final admission will be granted only after the physical verification of all these documents after which the fee is to be paid by the student. - Umesh
