Bharathi Women's College formerly called as Government Arts College for Women was established in the year 1964. The college got the name Bharathi Women's college in the year 1981-82, during the centenary celebration of Subramaniya Bharathi, a renowned Tamil poet. The college is recognized by the UGC and is accredited by the NAAC. It is an autonomous college affiliated to the University of Madras. The college is re-accredited with an ‘A' grade by NAAC. The institution caters the educational needs of the women students by providing them with quality education. The college offers many scholarship programmes and provides financial support for the education of women students.
AcademicsBharathi Women's college offers UG courses, PG courses, M.Phil and Ph.D programmes. The college has nearly 13 different departments and is providing education to the students in multiple disciplines. The college offers education in Tamil and English medium of instructions for some of the UG courses. The college encourages research programmes in arts, science, language and social sciences by providing good infrastructure and support.
InfrastructureThe college campus covers an area of 8 acres of land and is located at George Town, Chennai. The college has spacious classrooms and well equipped laboratories with latest equipment. To update the practical knowledge of the students, the department of science conducts regular practical classes for the students in the science respective laboratories. The college library caters to the informational needs of both the students and staff. The library has many books, journals, research papers and magazines. The students are also allowed to access the digital library and can read e-books and e-journals. The college hostel which is present inside the campus provides accommodation to the students with good facilities. The college has a playground and facilities to play sports and games such as basketball, ball badminton, kabaddi, volleyball, Kho-Kho, football, hockey,etc.
ActivitiesBharathi Women's college supports student related activities. The college has a student council and the members from the student council represent the students in various activities. The students from the college are encouraged to volunteer their service in NCC, NSS, YRC, RRC and Go Green club. The service wings of the college conducts and participates in awareness programmes, rallies, blood donation camp, waste management, etc. The college gives training to the students in sports and games and allows the students to participate in the sports meet and competitions conducted by the private institutions.
