About Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Government Medical College
Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Government Medical College or B.J. Medical College (BJMC), as it is commonly referred to and its affiliated Sassoon Hospital has a very illustrious past. It was here in the year 1924 that Mahatma Gandhi was admitted for an appendicitis operation. At that time Gandhiji was serving a prison term at the Yerawada Central Jail, Pune. The medical college is a very old one, as it was founded in 1878 by Byramjee Jeejeebhoy, a Parsi businessman and a renowned philanthropist of that era. B.J. Medical College offers a number of courses, including undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate courses in medicine. The postgraduate courses are of both degree and diploma types. The degree courses are of 3 years duration and the diploma ones of 2 years. There are also super specialty MCh training courses that are offered in specialties like cardiovascular & thoracic surgery, neurosurgery and plastic surgery. A one-year Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology is offered to those who practice the Homoeopathy line of treatment. BJ Medical College was earlier affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University, but is now affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nasik. The college is being managed by the Government of Maharashtra. Even though the college was established in 1878, it was in the year 1946, after 68 years that the college started working as a full-fledged medical institute. As of today, the college is amongst the most reputed medical schools in the country. As for Sassoon Hospital, it was founded in 1869 by a Jewish philanthropist named David Sassoon, on whose name the hospital was named. The college provides pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical training through its association with Sassoon Hospital.
Infrastructure Both the medical college and the hospital are located very close to Pune Railway Station. In fact, it is within walking distance from the station. The various departments at the college are anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, orthopaedic, microbiology, pharmacology, paediatric, forensic science, skin & V.B., psychiatry, surgery, E.N.T., dental and a few others.
Admissions Admission to the undergraduate degree course is through NEET, for which the candidates have to apply at the NEET NTA website. Only on successfully qualifying the NEET can one hope to apply for admission at this college. 85% of the seats are reserved for candidates from the Maharashtra state and the rest 15% is the All India Quota. There are around 250 seats for the undergraduate course. For postgraduate courses also the admissions are through entrance tests that are held at the state and the national level. Some of the seats are reserved for those medical graduates, who have completed certain years of service in the rural areas of Maharashtra. The PG admissions number is around 150. - Dhruv
