About Patna Medical College

The Patna Medical College and Hospital was started in the year 1874 and is the second oldest institute in the eastern part of India. The college is supposed to have originated from the Patna School of Medicine that was started with an aim of offering proper training to the surgeons from the army and civil hospitals located in eastern India. Dr D.B. Smith was its first principal and it started with 20 students which increased to 54 students by the end of the year.

The school received financial support from the local public and the poor students did not have to pay any fee. The funds received were also used for improving the facilities and even maintaining the old facilities in the college. Gradually, the need for proper medical training was felt by the people and it was then that the Patna Medical College and Hospital was established with financial support from various government institutions. The college was officially started in the year 1925 and Sir Henry Wheeler inaugurated it on 25th July.
