While engineering and management streams are very popular courses pursued by students enrolling in colleges in Kochi, legal education in this city is not to be overlooked. After all, the High Court of Kerala is located in Kochi. Two prominent centres of legal education in Kochi are the Government Law College in Ernakulam and the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS).
Progressing from an initial organization of law class to an independent college in 1874, the Government Law College in Ernakulam, Kochi has undergone a lot of positive changes in terms of its infrastructure and legal courses. Earlier under the management of different organizations, as of 1983, the institute is a constituent college of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam with an affiliation to it.
Government Law College in Ernakulam, Kochi offers two Degree programs, namely a three-year LL.B. Degree Course of six semesters and a five-year LL.B. Degree Course of 10 semesters. The LL.M. course of four semesters is a postgraduate course in Commercial Law and Criminal Law. Those keen on further research-based studies can enrol for a Ph.D in Law program.
Admission to all the LL.B and LL.M courses is through entrance exams that are conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, Government of Kerala. The curriculum of each course is not merely bookish in nature but is very much relevant to public case law. Furthermore, academic discussions and public debates are scheduled, as also working on case studies to apply the knowledge acquired through the classroom teaching sessions. There is even an interesting national Moot Court competition. Students can enjoy activities on the campus by enrolling as members of various clubs, including a Justice Club, a Nature Club, a Sports Club, etc.
A unique aspect of the college is the Criminal Law Centre. This centre focuses on technical assistance programs for the development of relevant tools and to conduct research-based analysis. There is also a Centre for Medical Law to provide students with an opportunity to understand the interconnected aspects of the two disciplines of medicine and law. It thus incorporates aspects like medical ethics, the rights of a patient, the responsibilities of medical practitioners in domestic violence, etc.
As for the fee structure, the fees are fairly reasonable and one is likely to pay less than, say, at the prestigious National University of Advanced Legal Studies. Need assistance with admissions to the Government Law College in Ernakulam, Kochi? Get connected to expert admission consultants.

NUALS is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and is recognized by UGC. Organizations from the legal sector visit the campus during placement sessions which are scheduled by the Campus Committee Recruitment Cell.
Admission to the undergraduate and postgraduate legal courses at NUALS is given on the basis of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). The Degree courses include a five-year B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) Degree program, and a one-year LL.M. program. There are two Postgraduate Diploma courses, one in Medical Law & Ethics, and the other in Cyber Law. A Degree program in Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is also offered. A mind-boggling 16 research centres make this university a happening place for scholars keen on research and training programs in a diverse range of fields, such as human rights, sports laws, etc. Easy access to online legal resources for students and faculty at the university library is an asset. Certificate courses may also be offered soon.
Like the Government Law College in Ernakulam, Kochi , NUALS conducts national Moot competitions in its spacious Moot Court Hall, one of which is dedicated solely to Maritime Law. The university also hosts intra-college Moot competitions. Seminars and workshops are scheduled as well, with eminent judges and others from the legal fraternity invited as Chief Guests to share their legal expertise with students and faculty.
Under the administration of efficient wardens, the University's two hostels and mess (one for boys and another for girls) operates smoothly. The campus also has indoor and outdoor sports facilities and a gym. A music room will soon be set up as well. A special Legal Aid Clinic provides legal advice to those who cannot afford to hire a lawyer. It also organizes community outreach programs and legal awareness camps.
Thanks to Endowments, there are Gold Medals to be won by top rank students for the UG and PG courses. Want to enrol for a legal education course at NUALS and be one of them? Get expert guidance for the admission process.
