Salem is an industrial area in Tamil Nadu well-known for its textile and handloom industries. Since many small scale and large scale textile businesses are ruling the economy of Salem, the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India has established a special institute named Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT) at Salem to conduct various degree programmes on handloom and technology. The aspirants who wish to pursue a degree in Handloom and Textile Technology can join IIHT. It is the only institution in India which offers B.Tech Handloom & Textile Technology course. The course is approved by AICTE and affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. Admissions into the B.Tech course at IIHT is purely based on the candidate's merit of rank in JEE Main exam of the corresponding academic year. At IIHT, the total of 30 vacant seats allotted for the UG course will be filled as per the reservation norms of GOI. Other than the UG course, IIHT also offers Diploma and Post Diploma courses in Handloom and Textile Technology. As a part of the skill development programme, IIHT conducts a special certificate course on “Handloom Entrepreneur" for the benefit of youths of weaver's families.

GCE, Salem is a premier government institution which is well known for high-quality technical education in Tamil Nadu. It is an autonomous college affiliated to Anna University.
