Course Details
BDS or Bachelor of Dental Surgery is a 4-year undergraduate program plus a 1-year mandatory internship in the field of dental surgery. It is equivalent to MBBS and is the second most popular course for medical science students after class 12. On completion of the course, one is entitled to be called Doctor and can prefix the term ‘Dr.' before their name.
During their 4 years of academic studies as well as practical visits to dental hospitals, the students get to learn various aspects of dental science. Even though in their professional work, they mainly deal with dentures, implants, dental problems, and their cure, they are also taught varied subjects like human anatomy, microbiology, physiology, biochemistry, embryology, histology, pedodontics, prosthodontics, orthodontics, dentistry and so on.
The BDS course is a popular one and there are numerous job opportunities for a BDS graduate. After BDS, one can aspire to become a dentist, a dental surgeon, an oral surgeon, an orthodontist, an oral pathologist and so on in hospitals, clinics, pharma companies or even do private practice. Many take up an MDS or Master in Dental Surgery program too.
Eligibility Criteria for B.D.S. Admissions
Candidates aspiring to join the BDS course should have passed class 12 with physics, chemistry and biology with at least 50% marks in aggregate. They should also have qualified in the English paper. Age of the candidate should be at least 17 years as on 31st December of the year of admission. The candidates need to qualify in the NEET UG exam held by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in the year of admission.
