Overview
World around there is a rapid growth in applications involving electronic circuitry. The same can be said about telecommunication and various other means of communication. There's a great demand for professionals trained in this field. So anyone doing this course is likely to be benefitted a lot. A good many sectors are served by it, such as telecommunication, consumer electronics, energy sector, aviation, aerospace, information technology and television. The course helps you in developing the necessary skills and expertise to work in any of the above fields. The computers that we see today, the internet that helps us remain connected with the whole world, are all applications of this branch of engineering.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Math or any equivalent qualification. Admissions are on the basis of entrance exams like JEE Mains and other similar exams.
The duration of this undergraduate course is 4 years.
More about the course
The complete course gets covered in 8 semesters. The first year of undergraduate studies is common for all branches of engineering. It's only when you reach the 3rd semester that the focus shifts on the core subjects of your branch. Electronics and communication engineering involves principles on transmission of information and signals through channels like optical fibre or co-axial cables. It also involves equipment such as routers, switches and electronic switching mechanisms. Some of the topics that you will study in this course are networks, electronic devices, analog & digital circuits, signals & systems, communications, control systems and electromagnetics.
Job opportunities
Electronics and communication engineers get the opportunity to work in a number of fields as mentioned earlier in the overview. Ample opportunities are existing in both private and public firms. For graduate engineers, there are openings in the government sector, in the three arms of the defence services and in organizations like DRDO, ISRO, BEL, BSNL and others. Some of the reputed private sector companies in this field are Siemens, Motorola, Texas, Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies, nVIDIA, Philips etc. There is a wide scope for higher education too. M.E, M.Tech and M.S. are few such options. Many students go for a highly rewarding research based career after doing Ph.D in this field. Going abroad is also a very good option. A few career options are Network Engineer, Network Administrator, System Analyst, Telecom Engineer, Electronics Engineer and so on.
