Overview
Mechanical engineering has numerous sub-disciplines. Among them, thermal engineering is one such specialised branch. The subject mainly deals with conversion of heat energy into other forms of energy like chemical, mechanical, light and electrical energy. The course, M.E. in Thermal Engineering, endeavours to equip you with the necessary expertise in heat transfer technology to transform thermal energy into other forms of usable energy. The field of thermal engineering encompasses heating or cooling of equipment, enclosed spaces and even processes. The field of thermal engineering has numerous applications and has good job prospects in many sectors.
Eligibility and course duration
Should be an engineering graduate preferably in the field of mechanical engineering or any equivalent branch from a recognized university. Should have scored more than 50% marks in your qualifying degree. Admissions to the course are mostly through entrance exams.
Duration of this postgraduate degree course is 2 years (four semesters).
More about thermal engineering
Thermal engineering has numerous applications. Some among them are solar heating, designing internal combustion engines, cooling of electronic equipment, refrigeration, power plants, design of boilers for power plants, heat exchangers, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) of enclosed spaces such as vehicles, indoor areas, etc. The aim of the course is to train you in the design and development of thermal energy systems and explore new areas in the field. It imparts knowledge in fields such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer and thermal design.
Course structure
Divided into 4 half-yearly semesters, the focus of the 1st two semesters is to impart theoretical learning along with laboratory works. The 3rd semester combines theory classes with project work and the final semester is purely for project and submission of project report. The students are provided with opportunities for summer training in actual industrial set ups.
Employment opportunities
As is apparent from its applications, a specialisation in thermal engineering provides you lot of opportunities in diverse fields, ranging from power stations, automotive industry, aerospace industry, cryogenics industry, solar equipment manufacturing and air-conditioning & refrigeration. Opportunities are there both in the private and the government sector in the country as well as abroad. There is scope for engaging in research and development in the field. One can pursue further education in the field by entering into a doctoral program or one can simply engage in a teaching job in one of the reputed colleges or universities.
