Overview
Geoinformatics, also known as Geographic Information System is a special branch of science and technology dealing with monitoring of spatial data by means of remotely sensed images. The data obtained is stored, classified, represented and analysed to maximise its output. The information is then visualized on a computer screen or even on a paper. The advantages of using geoinformatics are numerous and a number of sectors are using the information thus obtained through remote sensing. The technology is being used for monitoring agriculture, forestry, irrigation, traffic, infrastructure, weather forecasting, disaster management and by the armed forces.
Eligibility and course duration
You should have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Math with at least 60% marks in aggregate. Admission to the course is either through marks scored in JEE Mains or through separate entrance exam conducted by the respective college.
Duration of this undergraduate program is 4 years.
More about Geoinformatics
Geoinformatics is a rapidly developing field involving the latest technology in remote sensing and information systems. To address problems associated with geosciences, it uses technologies that include Geographic Information System(GIS), Global Positioning System(GPS) and Remote Sensing. The GPS that we use in our mobiles and cars are part of geoinformatics. Almost every organisation today needs spatial data in some or the other form. The data thus collected and fed to an information technology system is utilised by the user organisations. Geoinformatics makes it very easy to collect and analyse the information, which would be otherwise not possible through manual means.
The course curriculum on geoinformatics includes topics like photogrammetry, web mapping, cartography, remote sensing, global navigational system and electives like urban planning and resource management.
Job opportunities
Geo Informatics is an upcoming career and opens up opportunities for you in India and abroad. As a geoinformatics professional you can hope to gain employment in centres specializing in geoinformatics in the government as well as private sector. National Remote Sensing Agency Hyderabad and Indian Space Research Organisation are two leading government organisations in this field. You can get jobs in government departments like urban planning, weather, fisheries, irrigation, etc. There are various opportunities for higher education like M.Tech, M.S. and Ph.D in the field in India and abroad and then join a research program. Some job titles in this field are GIS Engineer, GIS Specialist, GPS and GIS Software Developer, Remote Sensing & Photogrammetric Expert and Urban Planner.
