Electronics
Duration: 4 years

Overview

Mechatronics engineering is a combination of various fields of engineering, namely mechanical, electrical, electronics, computers, information technology and control engineering. It uses the principle of control systems to generate a system or product which is more economical, reliable and simpler. By incorporating sensors, actuators and controllers such systems usually have a certain level of intelligence too. With rapid technological development in sectors such as electronics and computers, the field of mechatronics is playing an expanding role in our manufacturing industries and other technical fields. Though originally, mechatronics meant only mechanical and electronics combined into one, but with time it has now included the other fields of engineering too in its purview.

Eligibility and course duration

Pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Math. Aggregate marks should be above a certain minimum. Admissions are mostly through entrance exams.

Duration of this undergraduate course is 4 years.

More about the course

As mechatronics is a combination of various branches of engineering, the course curriculum focuses on a diverse range of subjects. To have a solid foundation in this field you need to have strong fundamentals in mechanical, electronics, computer science, control and systems engineering. Additionally you have to brush up skills on subjects like robotics, artificial intelligence, machine vision, etc. As a mechatronics engineer you will be responsible for designing and development of mechanical equipment by incorporating the functions of electronics and computers in the heart of the equipment. You will be also into maintaining and designing of automated machineries. Mechatronics has a role in most sophisticated equipment like cars, aeroplanes and even space vehicles.

Scope of mechatronics

Since mechatronics is an emerging field blending electronics and other streams with mechanical engineering, it has a very good potential in the coming future. Some of the fields where this branch of engineering has found applications are: automation in manufacturing industries, robotics, remote sensing, automobiles, computer numerical control (CNC) machines, medical diagnostics, medical imaging systems, systems with artificial intelligence, computer aided design and a lot more. Most of the job opportunities in this field are in the advanced countries like United States, Japan and Germany. The field is however, getting popular in India too. There are numerous opportunities for a research based career in this field, especially in the West. Those inclined towards research can go for higher education or a research program by opting for courses like M.E./M.Tech and Ph.D.
