Overview
Metallurgy is the science of metals. It's a field of material science. In metallurgy we study the physical and chemical properties of metals, their compounds and of alloys. Metallurgy deals with extraction of ores from the depths of Earth and processing them into useful metals and alloys. It gets further divided into 2 fields, ferrous metallurgy and nonferrous metallurgy. Ferrous metallurgy is about iron based metals and alloys, whereas, non-ferrous metallurgy involves metals other than iron. 95% of the metal production is however, iron based. In this field you get opportunities for jobs as well as higher education and research.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Math. Most admissions are through entrance exams. Minimum cut-off marks may be mandatory for the best colleges.
Duration of this undergraduate course is 4 years.
More about the course
The complete course is covered in 8 semesters. For the first 2 semesters the course curriculum is same for all engineering branches. It's only from the third semester that one gets to concentrate on metallurgical engineering. Through this course you come to learn various aspects of metals, their physical and chemical attributes. You learn about inter-metallic compounds and alloys, their applications and usefulness to engineering and industries. It also deals with extraction of metals from ores, processing them and obtaining pure metal. You get to learn about heat treatment and metal working techniques, such as casting, forging, drawing, rolling, extruding, etc.
Job opportunities
As a metallurgical engineer there are lots of avenues to seek employment. You get opportunities to work in companies and industries that deal with manufacturing of metals. A number of companies from the private and the public sector are into production of steel and steel based products. A few examples of government owned plants are Durgapur steel plant and Rourkela steel plant, which come under the purview of Steel Authority of India (SAIL). Tata steel and Jindal steel are private manufacturers, where too one can seek work. Aluminium based companies like Hindalco and Nalco are also good enterprises to work for. Other than these one can get good opportunities to work in copper based industries too. Away from jobs, one also has the option to seek higher education in this field. M.S. and M.Tech are few such options. From there on, one can go for a research based career, whether in India or abroad.
