Overview
M.E. in Power System Engineering is for graduates in the electrical field, who want to jumpstart their career in power or energy systems. The job outlook for electrical engineers has always been bright and this course adds an additional value to your engineering degree, thus helping you reach the higher echelons much faster. Employment opportunities get a tremendous boost by doing this course. Power system engineering is about generation of electrical power, its transmission, distribution and final utilisation by electrical equipments connected to the system. It is a study about motors, generators, transformers and other electrical devices.
Eligibility and course duration
You should be a graduate in engineering, preferably in electrical branch or a related field. Admission criteria vary from institute to institute. Some may give preference to GATE score or may conduct an entrance test. Marks in the qualifying degree should be above a certain minimum.
Duration of this postgraduate course is 2 years
More about the course
The course is covered in 4 semesters. The first three semesters focus on theory and lab practicals. The fourth semester is devoted towards project work, seminars and industry visits. The project report is to be submitted at the end of the course. The course draws its inputs from both electrical and energy engineering. It delves deeply into generation of power, conversion of AC into DC and vice versa and the aspects about 3 phase power. The course also covers topics on specialized power systems such as those used in aircrafts, ships and in the electrical rail networks. Along with generation of power through generators, the course delves on transmission and distribution too. The way electrical power is utilized by converting it into different forms of energy such as mechanical energy, heat, light, etc is also the focal point.
Job opportunities
Plenty of opportunities open up after doing a postgraduate course in power systems engineering. From private to the public sector, a number of companies are in the business of power generation and distribution. Power equipment manufacturing companies like BHEL in the public sector and others in the private sector like multinational company General Electric are regular employers. PSUs like NTPC and Power Grid too employ professionals in large numbers. Professionals in this field are also in demand in the Gulf countries and in the western world. One can also get into a doctoral program either in the country or abroad.
