Overview
Chemical engineering is a dynamic field that involves applying principles from fields such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology for the production of chemicals and their use as food, drugs, fuel and a host of other products. It also involves finding economical ways to utilise our energy resources, for the ultimate benefit of mankind and the environment. The field involves designing and developing processes to extract economically useful materials and transforming them into valuable products. This branch of engineering helps you get into the chemical, petrochemicals and in the refining industry. As a career, chemical engineering is a field in demand.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with physics, chemistry and math from a recognized board or university. Admissions are mostly through entrance exams like JEE Mains and those conducted by different universities. A high percentage of marks in 10+2 is essential.
Duration of this undergraduate degree program is 4 years.
More about the course
The complete course is divided into 8 semesters of six months each. The subjects taught in the first two semesters are same for all branches of engineering. From 3rd semester onwards, the course curriculum starts concentrating on subjects of chemical engineering. The course covers various topics related to chemical industry and the application of chemistry in the mineral industry, pharmaceuticals, petroleum refining, synthetic products and petrochemicals. You learn about the production of chemicals and its by-products. It involves studying designing of chemical plants, maintaining them and developing processes that converts chemicals into useful products. As a chemical engineer you also learn to develop new synthetic materials that can replace natural resources that are too precious or in short supply. Chemical engineers by developing numerous such products have been instrumental in improving the quality of human life.
Job Opportunities
The job prospects in the field of chemical engineering are very bright. One can opt to work in a host of industries related to the chemical industry. From pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, food processing, textiles, plastic industry, petroleum products, refineries, paint and dyes, R&D labs, there are a host of other fields where a chemical engineer can find employment. Job opportunities are there in both the private and public sector. Those intending for higher education in the field can opt for M.Tech or M.S. after undergoing this course. Those having the inclination towards research can ultimately go for Ph.D and specialize in one of the fields in chemical engineering.
