Overview
M.Tech in Thermal Science deals with the study of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics and a variety of other subjects like combustion, refrigeration, airconditioning, micro fluidics, jet propulsion and so on. The study of thermal science is of immense importance as the various applications of heat transfer, thermodynamics and combustion are based on its principles. Thermodynamics has applications in refrigeration systems. Heat transfer finds applications in ventilation, airconditioning, heating and in heat exchangers. The famous Bernoulli's Theorem belongs to fluid mechanics and finds applications in aerofoils, turbo machineries, etc. Combustion principle has applications in IC engines, gas turbines and jet propulsion systems.
Eligibility and course duration
An undergraduate engineering degree in mechanical, automobile, industrial, production and manufacturing science with at least 50% marks in aggregate. Others with AMIE and equivalent qualification may apply too. Selections are based on entrance tests or GATE scores.
Duration of the program is 2 years.
More about the course
Thermal science concerns with a lot many applications. The electrical energy that is produced in thermal and nuclear power plants is a direct application of this field of science. Our automobiles with internal combustion engines and the jet planes working on gas turbine principles are notable applications. Refrigeration and airconditioning have been all made possible through the study of thermal science principles. Its study is all the more important, especially for a country like India which is short of energy. It is challenge for country's engineers to supply clean and green energy. So here in this field you will get the opportunity to design and develop thermal and energy systems. You will be developing your knowledge and skill through theory as well practical classes. There will be also opportunities to pay industrial visits to power plants, automobile industry and research laboratories. In the final year you get the opportunity to do the internship in the concerned industries.
Job opportunities and prospects
Undertaking this course has numerous career opportunities in power plants, energy industries, automobile manufacturers and the aviation sector. You could be also working in nuclear power plants, emission control industry, refrigeration and the airconditioning industry. Other than these there are various other industries that utilises the principle of heat transfer, thermodynamics or fluid mechanics. There is a big opportunity in the field of research in thermal systems. Towards that end, you may take up an M.Phil or PhD program and enhance your research skills.
