Overview
As is apparent from the name of this course, biomedical engineering is a confluence or combination of biological sciences and the different fields in engineering and technology. The main idea behind setting up this field of study was to improve upon the healthcare and provide the best of the medical facilities to mankind by taking help of technology. Technology and engineering has been utilised optimally to get the best in diagnosis, treatment and operation for the prevention of illnesses. Principles from mechanical, electrical, electronics, computer science, physics, chemistry, math and statistics have been taken to give shape to biomedical engineering. Even though an upcoming field, a lot has been achieved. One example is the artificial limb that has been a boon to most physically handicapped people.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 or an equivalent exam with physics and math as compulsory subjects. Admissions are mainly through entrance exams.
Duration of the course is 4 years.
More about the course
Biomedical engineering is a lot like biotechnology which too uses technology for the developments in biological sciences. An interdisciplinary field, biomedical engineering is kind of an amalgamation of all the disciplines named above and is divided into certain sub disciplines. Some of the sub-disciplines are tissue engineering, biomedical imaging, bioinstrumentation, systems physiology and biomechanics. One of the most important things to keep in mind is that one has to have strong fundamentals in the basic sciences. The foundation should be strong for the subjects math, physics, chemistry and biology.
Career scope in biomedical engineering
Being a relatively new field, the opportunities are quite limited as of now in the country. But in subsequent years, there are going to be lot of development in the field of biomedical engineering and more applications will come up. However, if one has no qualms crossing the borders, then one can avail of the excellent facilities available in the western world both in the industries and in research. As of now most of the jobs in the country in biomedical engineering are mainly focused on sales, customer support, service, maintenance and management. Whatever research is done in the country is mainly done in the labs in research centres and universities. You can also go abroad and further your education by pursuing courses such as MS, M.Tech and even PhD in biomedical engineering. For those planning for a research based career PhD is the ultimate qualification.
