What a food process engineer does?
Food engineers are into a range of activities with respect to food. They are into creating new food products that's going to entice the consumers and to identify ways to preserve food for a longer period, through packaging and other means. It's for the food engineers to find out the additives that can prolong the shelf life of food products. Turning low shelf life items like milk and cheese into products that are shelf stable, is one such example of what they do. They also work on product packaging, finding ways to prevent spoiling of the food, when exposed to air, moisture or sunlight. They work on methods to keep food fresh even when it is kept open.
About the course
The course gives you an in-depth understanding of food, its composition, texture and how it reacts to certain elements or chemicals. There are topics on food storage, quality control, practicing safe food guidelines and safe packaging of food. Expiry period of packaged foods is an important aspect, stressed upon. Knowledge about food safety measures and handling safety equipment in large food plants is also delved upon.
