Overview
The field of physiology deals with the functioning of the human body, the various organs and the tiny cells and tissues. Other than being composed of cells and tissues, the human body has also numerous systems that keep the body functioning day in and day out. The mechanical, physical and biochemical functions keep us in good health. The field of physiology is part of the biological sciences that plays a very important role in helping us understand how the various organs, tissues and cells in our body keep us alive. It also helps in understanding the causes that may impair our health and lead to diseases. Understanding the human physiology is very important as it helps us in devising diagnostic techniques and treatment procedures.
Eligibility and course duration
Passed 10+2 or other equivalent exams in the science stream with physics, chemistry biology and math.
Duration of the course is 3 years.
More about the course
The bachelors program on physiology gives you an understanding of the body mechanisms at various levels, namely at the cellular, tissue and organ level. You get to relate the various functions of the body with the organs and the systems in the body. It is important to note that it is through the study of physiology that we are able to devise the numerous treatments and the medicines. No doubt it is through physiology that we learn about the biological processes that keep us ticking. Other than human physiology the field also concerns with animal physiology too.
Some of the topics that are part of this course are biochemistry, biochemical principles, biostatistics, blood and body fluids, clinical biochemistry, environment physiology, histology, microbiology and so on. Among the systems covered are the nervous system, respiratory system, endocrine system, cardiovascular system, circulatory system, etc.
Job opportunities
Considering the importance of the subject, there are a good number of opportunities in the field of physiology. The field of healthcare provides for the best prospects in this respect. There are a number of areas where you can specialize. You can think of getting into nutrition, pharmacy, nursing, physiotherapy, radiography, toxicology and so on. You can also work on public and environmental health. Since physiology also relates with animal studies, one can fancy getting into areas such as veterinary. And ultimately you can further your education by undergoing post graduate courses in the field like M.Sc, M.Phil and PhD.
