Overview
With the kind of technological development taking place in various fields such as electronics, instrumentation and information technology, systems around the world are getting automated. The plane on which we travel, flies on auto-pilot. The manufacturing processes in our industries are getting automated, requiring minimum human interference. Automation or automatic process control is the process in which control engineering plays a part by taking the help of instrumentation. The instrumentation part monitors the whole process, based on which the control signals are given to control the process. Instrumentation and control engineering thus enables the automatic control of the processes on a continuous basis.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Math. Most admissions are through entrance exams like the JEE Mains. Minimum marks in 10+2 should be above 50%, but requirements may vary from institute to institute.
Duration of this undergraduate course is 4 years.
More about automation
Automatic control of processes is not only limited to aeroplanes or the manufacturing industry. These days almost every other field has applications based on automation. Automatically opening doors and automatic temperature control by an air-conditioner are also examples of automation. From food processing plants, distilleries, chemical plants, oil refineries, assembly lines to nuclear power stations, most industries and sectors are getting automated. The aim of these automatic control systems is to improve upon the productivity, efficiency, reliability and safety of the system. All these automation is possible because of instrumentation and control engineering.
About the course
Through this course you learn to design, develop and maintain a control system using necessary instrumentation. You learn about topics on industrial instrumentation, system dynamics, control system and process control. Knowledge of certain programming skills is also imparted through this course. As far as instrumentation is concerned, it is the science of measurement of a variety of process variables, such as pressure, temperature, humidity, RPM, force, etc. You also learn about the control systems through which the processes get feedback and the whole process gets controlled automatically.
Job opportunities
The job prospects in this field are improving because more and more industries are getting automated. Instrumentation and control engineers have employment opportunities in fields such as aviation, aerospace, manufacturing industries, railways, oil and gas, power generation, pharmaceuticals and wherever there is scope for automation. For a research based career, you have the option of joining M.Tech and P.hD courses.
