Overview
All the physical infrastructure that we see around us, like roads, dams, bridges, buildings, airports, etc are as a result of the hard work done by civil and structural engineers. Today, we are able to lead a comfortable life in our homes and offices, thanks to the civil engineers. As such, those aspiring for a career in this field have numerous opportunities in different aspects of civil and structural engineering. It is perhaps one of the oldest fields of engineering and has a number of sub-disciplines, like architectural, environmental, construction, geotechnical, etc. Structural engineering is one such sub-discipline of civil engineering.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Math. Admissions are mostly through entrance tests and based on merit. Marks obtained in 10+2 are crucial for getting into the merit list.
Duration of this undergraduate course is 4 years.
More about the course
Civil and structural engineering deals with designing buildings and other non-building structures. It involves building dams, canals, bridges, high-rises, pipelines and non-building structures like machineries, vehicles, ships, aircrafts, medical equipment and so on. A structural engineer ensures the structural integrity of building components such as columns, beams, floors and also the complete building. It's the responsibility of structural engineers to ensure that built structures are completely safe, reliable, aesthetically pleasing and economical.
You begin the course with a fundamental knowledge about civil engineering. From learning properties of a wide range of materials to learning skills in structural design and analysis, you learn about modelling techniques and dabble with engineering mathematics. There are optional topics on transport, water and public health engineering. Geotechnics, fluids, surveying and environmental impact are the other topics you get to master. Since most constructions today are designed by using the benefits of information technology, one gets to build up skills on computer aided design (CAD) and other programming technology.
Job Opportunities
Civil and structural engineers have numerous opportunities in diverse fields. Whether designing a tunnel, flyover, skyscraper, multi-deck car parking, an airport terminal or an oil platform, they get to work in a variety of areas. Civil engineering jobs are available in both the public domain as well as in the private sector. Professionals from this field are very much in demand by most construction companies in the Middle East and elsewhere. One can do a M.E or M.Tech in this field and later on Ph.D for a research based career.
