Overview
For a large country like India, where the primary occupation of two-third of its population is farming, the field has lot of scope for the educated and trained professionals of the country. As the name suggests, the field concerns with farming methods, machineries and techniques to improve upon the yield as well as quality of the produce. Through research and trials, measures are devised so that agriculture as a full time profession can provide the farmers with a reliable source of regular income. Agricultural engineers perform many tasks related to farming and is not limited to machineries and equipment alone. Other aspects like land, water, soil, irrigation, surveying, waste management and livestock too fall under their purview.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Math. Admissions are mostly through entrance exams. Minimum pass marks is 50%, but varies with college.
Duration of the course is 4 years.
More about the course
To feed the ever increasing population, our farmers need to produce more and more. But land and resources such as water being limited, it's upon the agricultural engineers to integrate technology with agriculture and provide a better and larger yield from our farms. The aim of the course is to provide you with the necessary knowledge and skill about farming methods, soil conditions, machineries, irrigation practices and other things related to agriculture. In this course you will be learning about agricultural machineries, equipment, structures and their design requirements. You learn about water management, conservation, storage and modern irrigation techniques like drip and sprinkler system. Flood water control, effluent treatment, environmental impact assessment and processing of agricultural produce are some of the other measures you learn during the course.
Job opportunities
Agricultural engineers can get into a lot many jobs like equipment manufacturing, food manufacturing, food processing, water management, effluent treatment and so on. One can get jobs involving construction works related to agriculture like dams, reservoirs, canals, cold storages and warehouses There are government jobs in the agricultural departments, irrigation departments, dairy boards and in research labs. They can also further their education in this field and become agricultural scientists, by opting for higher education courses like M.Tech and Ph.D. One can specialize in agricultural engineering, farm machinery, crop production, renewable energy and rural technology. There is also scope for entrepreneurship in the field. Teaching jobs in agricultural universities is also a good option for agricultural engineers.
