Overview
Instrumentation engineering is a specialized branch of the field of electricity and electronics. It mainly deals with sensors, transducers and electronic instruments used for measuring, monitoring and recording certain parameters. Some such instruments based on the principles of electronics are seismic sensors, fire detectors, medical equipment like blood sugar monitor and so on. Electronics and instrumentation engineering plays a pivotal role in the field of automation. With miniaturization of components and developments in the field of electronics, most manufacturing processes these days are getting automated. Industries based on automation depend upon sensors and instruments as control equipment. All that development makes this field an attractive one .
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Math. Admissions are mainly though results of entrance exams like JEE Mains and marks obtained in 10+2.
The duration of this undergraduate course is 4 years and is covered in 8 semesters.
More about the course
With advancements in automation and control engineering, the scope of instrumentation is increasing every passing day. Instruments, transducers and sensors are the soul of automatic control in manufacturing processes, aviation, aerospace applications, medicine, fire detection & fighting, chemical plants and a host of other fields. Applications like measuring even minute levels of toxins in food with more precision and accuracy is now possible because of advanced sensors and instrumentation.
The course curriculum includes topics on analog and digital electronic devices, measurement and control of parameters such as temperature, pressure, flow, viscosity, etc. Learning about microcontrollers, their design and programming, forms part of the syllabus. Then there are topics on control theory, process control, electronic circuitry and network theory, enabling students to get a profound knowledge of electronics and instrumentation engineering.
Job opportunities
With rapid progress in fields such as automation and control engineering, the scope for engineers specialized in the field of electronics and instrumentation is increasing by leaps and bounds. Most industries whether in the private sector or under government control have vacancies for professionals from this field, as more and more industries and manufacturing sectors are getting automated. From computer hardware to robotics, a host of industries are always on the lookout for electronics and instrumentation engineers. There are also opportunities for higher education in this field. One can opt for postgraduate courses in related fields like M.Tech and Ph.D. It's possible to have a research based career, whether in the country or abroad.
