Overview
World over most industries and manufacturing processes are getting automated. Control engineering and instrumentation have a role to play in achieving automated processes. It is through instruments, sensors, transducers, actuators and other electronic equipment that processes get controlled automatically. A number of physical parameters, including temperature, pressure, rpm and flow are sensed, measured by electronic devices and necessary feedback or control signal is then given back to the process for achieving the necessary correction. Once corrected, parameters are continuously monitored automatically and the complete process remains under control. Instrumentation and control engineering plays an important role in improving reliability and efficiency of processes, whether manufacturing or otherwise. As such, this field is very much in demand by students.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Math. Admissions are through entrance tests like JEE Mains and others. Marks in 10+2 are crucial too.
Duration of this undergraduate course is 4 years.
More about the course
Electronic instrumentation and control engineering is an interdisciplinary branch, that includes studying electrical, electronics, instrumentation and a good many concepts on computer engineering. Instrumentation engineering has in effect evolved from electrical and electronic engineering, applying the principle of both. The chief aim of instrumentation and control engineering is to achieve greater productivity, reliability, safety, control and stability. Control engineering or controlling the processes is one of the chief applications of instrumentation. As an instrument or control engineer, you will be installing, calibrating, commissioning, maintaining and repairing a complex system of measurement and control in a variety of process based applications.
Job opportunities
Instrumentation and control engineers mostly get to work in industries where the processes are automated. Whether it's a power plant, chemical plant, manufacturing plant, refineries, nuclear power station, transportation, research labs, aviation, space stations, beverage or food processing plant, automation is the order of the day. Robotics is one nascent field, where lots of opportunities are likely to come up in the near future. Thus, one can get to work in any of the above or scores of other related fields. Whether in the private industries or in the government sector there's no dearth of jobs in this field. The scope improves further when one undergoes a postgraduation course like M.Tech or M.E. in the field. There are tremendous scope for research in the field in India and abroad. One need to do a Ph.D for research based jobs.
