Overview
Metallurgical engineering concerns with the study of physical and chemical properties of metals, intermetallic compounds and alloys. It's also concerned with the production of metals and the engineering processes undertaken to extract the metallic elements from the ores to bring them into shape and into useful forms. Metallurgical engineers have a huge scope as the country is rich with mineral resources. There are a lot many industries in the country based on the field of metallurgy and one can very well establish a rewarding career in this field. B.Tech Metallurgical Engineering is the perfect roadway to success in this field.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Math or any equivalent qualification. Admissions are mainly through common entrance exams like JEE Mains and a few others, conducted by universities or by states. It is essential to have minimum 60% marks in 10+2.
Duration of this undergraduate course is 4 years.
More about the course
This eight semester undergraduate program opens up diverse avenues in the field of metallurgy. It provides you with the knowledge of different aspects of physical, extractive and mechanical metallurgy. Through this course you come to learn about the design, production and testing of different kinds of metals, compounds and alloys. Metallurgy is an emerging branch and in the years to come the role of metallurgy in producing metals or materials of the desired qualities will be of prime importance in many applications like aeronautics, aerospace, nuclear science, etc. Some of the topics which you will be covering during the course are material science, engineering mechanics, strength of materials, heat treatment, fluid mechanics, industrial engineering and some more. There are two kinds of metallurgy, ferrous and non-ferrous. The former is iron based and the other of different metals.
Job opportunities
Metallurgical engineers can seek jobs in most metal based industries. There are many steel based companies in the country. A few among them are SAIL, Tata Steel and Jindal Steel. Similarly there are aluminium and copper based industries too. HINDALCO and NALCO are two famous government aluminium manufacturing countries. Cable manufacturing companies using copper as conductor material are also good opportunities for employment. With experience and suitable qualifications, metallurgy professionals can opt for an academic career in universities and colleges. Many in this field go for higher education like M.Tech and P.hD. After P.hD, lucrative research based careers open up for those willing to go abroad.
