Overview
Over the years, medical care and agricultural production have improved with leaps and bounds. The use of advanced technology has brought rapid changes in medicines and in health care facilities. At the same time new challenges are coming up. Biotechnology as a specialized branch is helping address those challenges ranging from those in the medical field, agriculture and environment. The field of biotechnology is an applied science and combines biological science with technology. Living organisms, cells, tissues and biological processes are made use of to develop new tools and products. The new techniques developed and the gains from biotechnology are very much helpful in a range of applications including agriculture, medicine, industrial and environmental.
Eligibility and course duration
B.E./B.Tech or an equivalent qualification in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, biochemical or chemical engineering. Minimum aggregate marks in graduation is 50%. Admissions are mainly through entrance tests.
Duration of this postgraduate course is 2 years.
More about biotechnology
For years mankind has been using biotechnology as a tool in a few fields, including agriculture and food production. It involved improvement in crops, plant cultivation and breeding of domestic animals. But in recent years, with the involvement in technology, biotechnology has taken an altogether different dimension. It has now diversed into new fields such as genomics, immunology, pharmaceutical therapies, diagnostic tests, tissue culture and genetic engineering. Some of the topics learnt in this course are: microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, embryology, molecular biology and cell biology. Topics outside the scope of biology, like bioinformatics, chemical and bioprocess engineering are also touched upon.
Job opportunities
Since biotechnology is a new phenomenon and a growing field, a lot many new opportunities are coming up every year. The field has varied applications. From medical science, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, animal husbandry, chemical and textile industries, newer applications are coming up, thus improving the scope for employment. Biotechnology is also finding applications in sectors such as food processing, aquaculture, biofuels, biodegradable plastics, vegetable oil and development of seeds. There are also tremendous scope for research in this field. There are many research based jobs, most of them and the research facilities are however, based in the western countries. Most students, after completion of this postgraduate program thus prefer to go for higher qualification, by opting for an M.Phil or P.hD program. Opportunities to go for an academic based career is also possible by getting recruited in reputed institutions spread across the world.
