Overview
Propulsion systems fall under the broad field of aerospace engineering. As an aerospace engineer, you will be into designing, manufacturing and testing aircrafts, missiles, rockets and spacecraft. By specializing in propulsion system through this M.Tech program, you will be more into designing the propulsion system for the above space bound vehicles. You will work towards improving the performance factors and reliability of the rocket motors that provide the necessary propulsion. You will be also working for the propulsion systems in jet engines and get into designing compressors, pumps, pressurization tanks, control systems and other components in a gas turbine engine. By taking up this program you can aspire to work for some of the leading aerospace companies and organizations in the world.
Eligibility and course duration
B.E./B.Tech in aerospace, aeronautical, mechanical or chemical engineering with at least 55% marks in graduation. A valid GATE score is also essential for applying for the program.
The duration of the M.Tech program is 2 years.
More about the course
Through this M.Tech program, you will come to know all about the propulsion systems that are used by rockets, missiles and jet engines. To take up this program you need to have a good grip on subjects such as thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and combustion. The designing of the propulsion systems are mostly done based on these fundamental principles in mechanical engineering. You will learn what all different propulsion system consists of. Aircrafts for example are propelled by jet engines, whereas missiles and spacecrafts are propelled by rocket engines. On combustion, the rocket propellant is formed into a high-speed jet that propels the vehicle forward, as is given by Newton's third law.
Some of the topics in propulsion engineering are fluid mechanics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, combustion science, aerodynamics, gas dynamics, turbo machineries, rocket propulsion and air breathing propulsion as in jet engines in modern jetliners. Among other things, you will learn to conceptualize a design of the propulsion system based on customer requirements and conforming to environmental regulations.
Job prospects and opportunities
Successful completion of this program will lead you to some of the best jobs in aerospace engineering. A number of state owned and private organizations are working in the field of development of aircrafts, rockets, spacecraft and space related work. Some of the best companies or organizations in this field are in the United States like NASA, Boeing, Lockheed and the others. Within the country DRDO and ISRO are the most renowned.
