Overview
The way computers are finding increasing applications in every field, software engineers too are finding themselves in demand in every sector. The IT and the technology sector require more and more of these professionals, who are mainly responsible for coming up with a new software every now and then. The aim of the postgraduate course in software engineering is to produce high quality software engineers and programmers for different fields like the IT sector, computers, telecommunications, aviation, aerospace, research, education, designing and many more. Software engineers also play an instrumental role in network management and in network design.
Eligibility and course duration
B.E./B.Tech or AMIE in computer science and engineering, information technology or other related fields with at least 50% marks. The admissions to the best colleges are based on GATE score or entrance tests.
Duration of the postgraduate program is 2 years (4 semesters).
More about the course
Over the years the software systems have become more and more complex. Systems these days are more powerful and can accomplish much more, compared to what they used to a few years back. With the advent of embedded systems and VLSI technology, we are now able to embed software in a variety of systems. A course in software engineering thus produces professionals who are into designing software systems for various applications. Being an M.Tech course, research work is given a lot of importance. The curriculum includes lab work, experiments, programming exercises and assignments involving simulation tools along with usual theory classes. Industry visits provide you with a first-hand experience in software development and designing. You get a deeper understanding of embedded systems technology, software development techniques, software testing, mobile computing, web development, system performance and evaluation techniques and so on.
Job opportunities
For a software engineer there are numerous opportunities in the software companies. Some of the renowned companies in this field are TCS, Wipro, Infosys Technologies, HCL, NIIT and many others. IBM, Dell and Apple Computers are some of the top MNCs to work for. Very good opportunities are available both in the country and abroad. Other than the IT sector, software engineers are in great demand in fields like telecommunication, weather forecasting, space research, aviation and so on. There is a demand for software engineers across various government jobs too. One also has the scope to do research in the field by undergoing research programs like PhD.
