Overview
Mechatronics is the combination of mechanical, electrical, electronics, computer and control engineering. The field of mechatronics is playing a very important role in integrating high end automated systems with the production process in industries and manufacturing units. Mechatronics is also instrumental in designing and development of very complex products, which otherwise would not have been possible with traditional manufacturing processes. It's a very upcoming field and in recent years most industries are adopting to automation and that has been made easy, all because of mechatronics. In the coming future it is going to play a much greater role in every activity related to production or manufacturing.
Eligibility and course duration
B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Computer Science, Production, Instrumentation or other related branches. AMIE degree holders are eligible too. You need to appear for an entrance test and selections will be based on merit.
Duration of this postgraduate course is 2 years.
More about mechatronics
Most of the applications of mechatronics can be seen in automation and robotics. The introduction of this new technology has resulted in drastic improvement in production processes and overall improvement in product quality, efficiency and reliability. Originally the field of mechatronics was a fusion of mechanical and electronics branches only. But with development in technology it has now spread over to a broad spectrum of fields. One big feature of this technology is that information can now be processed and communicated through different forms of signals, which can be mechanical, electrical, chemical, hydraulic, optical or pneumatic in nature.
Some of the topics that you will come across during the course are Numerical Methods, Computational Techniques, Microcontrollers, Industrial Automation, Drives and Actuators. Optionals like Robotics, Circuit Analysis, Computer Aided design, Digital Controls are part of the program too. Through this course you will be picking up skills in developing a simple, reliable and economically prudent system.
Job opportunities
Mechatronics engineers get to work in most industries where automation plays a key role. They are the persons who are responsible for creating and maintaining the automated processes. Such engineers are required in both the private and the public sector. Mechatronics has got a lot of scope in foreign countries and many after finishing their studies in this field opt to travel abroad and get absorbed in the industries or get into research work. There is a wide scope for doing a doctoral program in this field by opting for a P.hD.
