Overview
Medical electronics is that field that concerns with the biomedical equipment and devices used by a medical practitioner for diagnosis and treatment of a patient. Some of these electronic equipment used in medicine are the imaging devices like CT scan and MRI equipment, ECG and EEG machines, sugar monitoring devices, pulse oximeters and so on. Without these modern equipment most doctors would be helpless in providing the best medical care to their patients. They are an integral part of every modern healthcare unit whether it's a small clinic or a big time hospital. The responsibility of looking after, operation and maintenance of these medical equipment falls upon the shoulders of medical electronics engineers. With more developments to come, the prospects in this field are bright.
Eligibility and course duration
B.E./B.Tech in electronics, electronics & communication, electronics & instrumentation, medical electronics, biomedical and other related engineering fields. Admissions are mainly through entrance tests.
Duration of the course is 2 years.
More about the course
The postgraduate program on medical electronics provides you with knowledge and expertise in developing, operating and maintaining medical devices that work on the principles of electronics. It familiarizes you with the various diagnostic techniques that these devices make use of in their line of treatment. Medical electronics is considered a specialized discipline that integrates the engineering field, especially electronics, with the biomedical sciences. These medical devices have now become a part and parcel of most clinical practices. One can say that engineering sciences and medicine has come together for the benefit of mankind. Medical electronics is a vast field and is growing up rapidly with the changing times. Research is being done in areas such as medical imaging, biomechanics, biosensors and bio signal processing to bring in more drastic changes in how we provide healthcare to our fellow humans. The subjects are a mix of electronics, instrumentation and medical science. For example biomedical instrumentation, medical imaging and anatomy, physiology, etc.
Career opportunities
With the rise in number of hospitals and other healthcare units along with improvement in medical technology, there's a rise in demand for medical electronics engineers. Such engineers can work in hospitals, medical colleges, research labs, medical equipment manufacturing firms, equipment maintenance and in developing software for such equipment. A few job profiles in this field are biomechanics engineer, clinical engineer, biomaterials engineer, bioinstrumentation engineer, researcher, etc. Those inclined towards research can go for doctoral programs like PhD.
