Overview
Material science engineers play an important role in technological development. Even though over the years we have learnt to use many different materials and have discovered new materials with exceptional properties, many of our current scientific problems are due to limitations of the currently available materials. For example, for future advancement in space travel, it is essential that we first develop materials that can sustain the rigours of space travel without breakdown and at reasonable costs. With material science there are wide possibilities. What we have discovered or developed till now is not even the tip of an iceberg. With continuous research in this field, we are likely to make breakthroughs that will make it easier for us to jump across many scientific barriers.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Math with at least 55% marks. Selections for the course are through entrance exams like JEE Mains.
Duration of this undergraduate course is 4 years.
More about the course
Material science and engineering explores the structure and properties of materials used for industrial and engineering purposes. The emphasis is on studying materials with many scientific applications. The course effectively builds up your knowledge base about a range of engineering materials and about the scientific principles in material science that help you in getting a good grasp of the subject. The course gives you a thorough grinding in understanding the different properties of materials, namely the physical, chemical and mechanical properties. You learn about the structure, composition and behaviour of the materials, especially the solids. There are lessons on how the properties of the materials are manipulated so as to improve upon their properties. You learn about processing and production techniques, about crystallography, diffraction and other methods used for studying the material structure. You learn of the advanced materials used in jet engines, nuclear reactors and how they are made.
Job opportunities
Material science engineers have a good scope in the industrial world. These engineers are highly sought after in industries such as aviation, aerospace, nuclear energy, arms and ammunitions, automobiles, microelectronics and many more. DRDO and ISRO, two government organizations involved in research work related to development of missiles and space technology, are good hunting grounds for material science engineers. There are many research and development positions in this field, both in the country and abroad. It is also your springboard for pursuing higher education like, M.E./M.Tech and then P.hD.
