Overview
As is apparent from its name an industrial engineer is mainly associated with production activities in manufacturing plants or factories. In an industrial set up, the primary objective of an industrial engineer is optimization and resource management. An industrial engineer sees to it that the resources are used optimally and the processes are so set up that production activity is achieved most efficiently. Whether it is managing human resource or material management, an industrial engineer sees it all. He or she sees that the production processes are so designed that the production costs are reduced, quality of the products are maintained and there is adequate safety for men and equipment.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Math with minimum 60% marks in aggregate. Admissions are done on the basis of entrance exams like the JEE Mains.
Duration of this undergraduate course is 4 years.
Role of an industrial engineer
An industrial engineer has to be responsible for every stage in the production process. They have to set up facilities for the production process to be carried out. They even modify the existing facilities and may expand the facilities or upgrade them. Other than this they will have to provide for new equipment to be set up or get new equipment to be purchased. They may have to design an entirely new process and also provide for new tools and fixtures.
More about the course
As part of their work profile, industrial engineers have to interact with other engineering branches. As such they are provided with a working knowledge of other fields of engineering. For a factory set up, they are familiarized with different work processes, tools and equipment, materials, etc. They are also taught about computer aided designing and computer aided manufacturing.
Job opportunities
Most industrial engineers get employed in the industries. Being a versatile field the knowledge gained in one field can be utilized in other fields too. Jobs are not only limited to manufacturing alone but available in other engineering and non-engineering fields too. One can get into petroleum, automotive, railways, aviation, transportation and other fields. They can also get into consultancy, quality control, facilities planning and product & system design. After finishing this course one can even pursue a postgraduate course in the field like M.E./M.Tech and M.Phil. Jobs are available in both the government and the private sector.
