Overview
Geoinformatics is a specialized field that is getting popular across the world. Geoinformatics is about remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) that endeavours to provide us with spatial information addressing problems associated with geography, cartography and location science. It is also a science and technology that deals with acquiring, storing, processing, analyzing and disseminating spatial data. In the country, the benefits of geoinformatics are felt in a number of fields like agriculture, irrigation, forestry, disaster management, flood and drought monitoring, urban planning, infrastructure development, military and in traffic management. It has numerous other applications like meteorology, climate change, weather forecasting, oceanography, telecommunications, aviation and shipping.
Eligibility and course duration
B.E./B.Tech in civil, mining, electrical, electronics, computers, IT or geoinformatics. Those with M.Sc degree in earth science, environmental science, geography, physics and math are also eligible, but with math in B.SC. Admissions are based on merit, GATE score or entrance tests.
Duration of the course is 2 years.
More about the course
In this course you get to understand the importance of the field of geoinformatics for the betterment of humankind. You come to understand how best to utilize our natural resources and how to get into sustainable development for the whole planet. You get to understand the various terms associated with geoinformatics such as remote sensing, global positioning system (GPS), global information system and spatial decision support systems. You learn about steps on geospatial analysis, modeling, developing geospatial database and designing information systems. You get to learn how geoinformatics can be useful to decision makers for a lot many activities like town planning, solving environmental issues, carrying out emergency services, crime mapping and a lot more. The data obtained is then used by a number of government and non-government agencies.
Job opportunities
The field of geoinformatics offers jobs both in the private and the government sector. Some of the well known government organizations employing professionals from this field are Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Geological survey if India and the defence and the environment ministry. They are also employed by various departments like the forest, agriculture, town planning, infrastructure development, geology, space application centre and many others. The oil industry, telecommunication industry and the transportation sector too employs geoinformatics professionals. There are also research based jobs in the field, jobs in training and education and good scope for undergoing PhD.
