M.Tech. Remote Sensing

Master of Technology in Remote Sensing

Are you a qualified graduate and looking for postgraduate courses in remote sensing? Desirous of making a career in a field that uses air and space based technology for acquiring information about our earth and its environment? Learn here about the course M.Tech. in Remote Sensing and its prospects.

Course Name: M.Tech. Remote Sensing
Group: M.Tech.
Stream: Engineering
Course Category: Civil
Environment
Duration: 2 Years

Overview

Remote sensing as we understand, is a way of acquiring information and data about the geographical features of earth and the environment without making any direct physical contact with any terrain or object. Mostly, remote sensing uses satellites or aircraft based sensor technologies to acquire the data. The data and information collected is then fed to a computer system which monitors, evaluates, analyses and passes it on for further processing or implementation. Remote sensing technology is being used in a number of fields like hydrology, geology, ecology, forestry, oceanography and has applications in military surveillance, weather monitoring, traffic monitoring, agricultural activity, climate control and so on. As more and more applications come up, the job outlook is very bright in this field.

Eligibility and course duration

An engineering graduate in any discipline or a masters degree in science. Admissions are through GATE, entrance tests/interview or merit based on qualifying exam.

Duration of the course is 2 years.

More about the course

The course on remote sensing explains you the growing relevance of the field of remote sensing in many of our economic activities and in safeguarding our environment. It explains about the techniques that are used in remote sensing and how it is advantageous compared to traditional methods of collecting data physically. One also learns about the increasing significance of remote sensing in tackling issues such as global warming, depletion of ozone layer, deforestation, floods, natural disasters, climate change and even weather forecasts. The course also explains about the principle involved in remote sensing and how the signals get received after striking the target object. Some of the technologies for remote sensing are radars, lasers, lidar, radiometers, photometers, hyperspectral imaging, sonars, seismograms, etc. As such, a strong background in physics and mathematics very much helps. Remote sensing has given us some popular applications like the Google Earth, which is a choice of millions all over the world.

Jobs and opportunities

Remote sensing provides a career in a number of fields. Some of these are mineralogy, mining, defence, environmental protection, weather forecasting, disaster warning, earthquake monitoring, water management and plenty more. Considering the demand for graduates in this field, the supply is quite low and this creates immense possibilities for employment in the government and the private sector. For postgraduates, there is a scope for undergoing programs like PhD. It's a growing field and there's a lot of possibility in research.
