Overview
With the rapid growth in the population and our cities expanding, the role of urban engineering and planning too has gained in significance. Land in the cities and towns are scarce and our highways are already chock-a-block with traffic. It's for the urban engineers to plan and deal with issues concerning highway planning, highway safety and transport management. With the government paying more focus on infrastructure development, the task of building roads and highways is on full steam. This creates lot of opportunities for urban engineers who are into this kind of work. Though there are various roles for an urban engineer, one of their prime responsibility is to ease congestion in our roads and highways by systematic management of traffic.
Eligibility and course duration
B.E./B.Tech in civil engineering, architectural engineering and other related fields. Admissions are through entrance exam or GATE score, as applicable.

The main objective of the postgraduate course in urban engineering is to train civil engineers to gain proficiency in tasks involving urban planning and infrastructure development. They are trained to do effective planning and designing of highways, transportation and gain skills in traffic management. They learn how to plan and develop the transportation infrastructure in towns and cities. The course also focuses on safety issues that affect our roads and highways. They learn how to manage municipalities. The curriculum focuses on a research based approach. Projects and assignments are regular part of the syllabus. You get to be part of various research and consultancy studies that are conducted by various international, national and other local organizations regarding infrastructure planning, land use, traffic, sustainable development and other urban engineering issues, especially those concerning the environment.

Urban engineers can have jobs in infrastructure planning, traffic management, urban planning, municipalities, transport planning and other departments related to the field. There are jobs in the government as well as the private sector. They can get into designing and construction of roads, highways, bridges and other infrastructural projects. Some of the job profiles in this field are town planner, traffic engineer, highway engineer, urban engineer, transportation planner, municipal engineer, facilities manager, conservation officer, etc. A few other jobs like estate agent, building surveyor, landscape architect, environmental manager and civil service administrator are the other possibilities. There is scope for pursuing research programs like PhD after this course.
