M.E. Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering

Are you a civil engineer looking for postgraduate courses on water resources engineering? Planning to specialize in the field of hydrology and managing water resources. Learn here the details of the course M.E. Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering. Learn the prospects the field has to offer.

Course Name: M.E. Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering
Group: M.E.
Stream: Engineering
Course Category: Civil
Conservation
Duration: 2 Years

Overview

Even though earth is blessed with plenty of water in the form of ocean and seas, only 2,5% of that is freshwater. More than 98% of freshwater is contained in polar icecaps, glaciers and as groundwater. That leaves only 0 .3 % of freshwater available for human consumption in rivers, lakes, ponds, etc. Considering that requirement for freshwater is increasing due to rising population and industrialization, water resources are to be prudently utilized. Our country is quite rich in terms of availability of water because of its numerous rivers and lakes and due to above average rainfall in most regions. A hydrology or a water resources engineer is thus expected to manage water resources with proper insight, planning and taking the advantage of technology.

Eligibility and course duration

B.E./B.Tech in civil, agricultural, irrigation and other related fields of engineering. Admissions mainly on the basis of GATE score and entrance tests.

Duration of the course is 2 years.

More about the course

Considering that water is one of the most important resources for life to exist, the field of hydrology or water resources engineering calls for due significance from one and all. It's not only as drinking water, but water also plays a very important role in most industrial activities and in food production. It also helps maintain the ecosystems. Water pollution is an important aspect that a hydrologist needs to get increasingly concerned with. Traditionally the role of a hydrologist was more focused towards flood protection and supply of water for various activities. But with increased agricultural and industrial activities and due to urbanization, a hydrologist or water resource engineer has to tackle greater challenges. Technology too is playing its role in the form of remote sensing, GPS, etc. Topics such as groundwater and surface water hydrology, hydraulics and hydrometeorology are gaining increasing significance. It's for an hydrologist to channelize all these knowledge and apply them in practice for a sustainable development of the economy.

Career opportunities

Hydrologists and water resource engineers have opportunities in a number of field namely, fresh water supply, irrigation, hydroelectric projects, water recycling projects, sewage treatment, waste water management, flood control, disaster management, dam and reservoir engineering. The opportunities are both in the government, non-government and the industrial sector. Opportunities exist in the field of research as scientists and researchers in government institutions. Further, to improve your job prospects you can undergo PhD courses in the field.
