Overview
The field of electrical and electronics is one of the most sought after. It perhaps comes second only to computer science, in terms of popularity among the engineering population of the country. Increasing numbers of applications are coming up all the time, especially in electronics. Electronics engineering is playing an increasing role in new age subjects and fields such as control engineering, telecommunications, instrumentation, robotics, aerospace, avionics, artificial intelligence and information technology. A postgraduate course in this field will add to your understanding of the various concepts and principles, both in the field of electrical and electronics.
Eligibility and course duration
Graduation in electrical, electronics or other related branches of engineering. Admissions to the courses are through entrance exams or through your GATE score. Minimum 60% marks in the qualifying degree.
Duration of this postgraduate course is 2 years and is spread over 4 semesters.
More about the course
As with other postgraduate courses in engineering, here in this course too, the first two semesters focus on theory and laboratory works. From 3rd semester the focus shifts to project work, which has to be completed and a report to be submitted before the end of the course. Also included are seminars that are to be attended and presentations which are to be made from time to time. The course thus aims to impart you with strong theoretical understanding of the concepts in electricity and electronics, at the same time providing you with an experience in design and development. It thus prepares you for a possible career in research or for pursuing a PhD. Whether it is the traditional electricity generation and transmission or the focus these days on computers, information technology, digitalization or telecommunications, the course gets you a thorough understanding of the subjects.
Job opportunities
It needs no mentioning that, the best of the opportunities are available in this field and one can make the most of a postgraduate degree in electricity and electronics. A host of fields are for you to choose from. Electricity generation, transmission, control engineering, power electronics, communications, information technology and computers are some of the fields one can choose for a career. Among the industries where one can join are power, manufacturing, telecommunication, aerospace, aviation, electrical and electronic equipment manufacturing. Other than these, one can join the servicing and maintenance industry in this field. Then there are options for PhD or academic based careers in colleges and universities.
