Overview
As is apparent from its name, the field of bioinformatics makes use of computers and technology, while studying biological processes. Information technology and computers are these days playing a great role in managing healthcare and the environment that we live in. It's through the channels of computing technologies that the biological processes are simulated and the data is analysed, thus improving our understanding about them. One of the biggest advances in scientific technology has been the decoding of the human genome. It is one big step that can be credited to bioinformatics and which has helped us in taking the first step towards understanding the mystery of life. As a growing field, it is likely to provide one of the best prospects in coming years.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with Biology, Computer Science or Statistics as one of the subjects.
Duration of this undergraduate course is 3 years.
More about the course
The course begins with making you understand the basic concepts about this emerging field called bioinformatics. Through these basic principles, you come to understand the interlink between the biological sciences and subjects such as computer science, statistics and mathematics. It explains the principles behind computational biology, where computers are taken advantage of in simulating processes and analysing data. Since it has got a lot to do with computers, you are also introduced to programming languages and database design. You get to familiarize with the most common tools and resources that are used in this field. Some of the topics that you are introduced to are; introduction to bioinformatics, molecular biology, genetics, genomics, biology of microorganisms, programming, data structures and also a few important topics from mathematics and statistics. Thus it can be seen that bioinformatics is a multidiscipline field.
Job opportunities in bioinformatics
Bioinformatics has excellent scopes in various fields such as medicine, biology, genetics and in pharmaceuticals. It is a research intensive field and one can opt for research in any one of the above areas. Pharmaceutical industry, biotech companies, hospitals, research institutions and industry sector are some areas, where one can work. Bioinformatics graduates also get to work in the IT sector and some of the top names from the IT sector are associated with this field. There are also good opportunities abroad in the industries and in research. You can follow up this degree by doing an M.Sc, followed by further higher qualification.
