Eligibility and course duration

Eligibility conditions vary. Reputed institutes like IISC have the following criteria. Postgraduate degree in mathematical sciences or B.E./B.Tech in relevant engineering stream. Should have qualified CSIR-UGC NET or UGC Net for JRF, or GATE or NBHM screening test or holding an INSPIRE PhD fellowship. Based on merit the candidates are called for interview.

Takes around 3-5 years to complete the program.

The PhD program in mathematics provides excellent opportunities for research in the field, either in pure or applied mathematics. Following the course work the students have to do some original research under a guide and write a dissertation. A dissertation committee examines the work and undertakes a viva-voce.
